Although the MHSAA kicks off this week, many of the state’s MAIS teams played in week 0 of the 2021 football season. An exciting time has finally arrived! Check out some of the top performers from last weeks short slate of games.
Tate Collins | Jackson Academy | QB
The recent Madison Central transfer has made a huge opening statement in the MAIS. Collins led Jackson Academy to a 37-0 win over Starkville Academy, totaling 148 yards rushing and a TD while also throwing for close to 100 yards and 2 scores. Although Collins has only been at JA for a little over a summer now, he looks ready to lead this team on a real shot at a MAIS state title.
Chris Bell Chris Bell 6'2" | 210 lbs | ATH Yazoo City | 2022 State MS | Greenville Christian | WR
Transferring into Greenville Christian recently, Bell has paired up exceptionally well with QB Deandre Smith Deandre Smith 6'2" | 210 lbs | QB Greenville Christian | 2022 State MS in his first two games. Bell had triple digit receiving numbers while also scoring 3 times in the match against Jackson Prep. Greenville Christian is now 2-0 after dominating Prep 48-13.
Deandre Smith Deandre Smith 6'2" | 210 lbs | QB Greenville Christian | 2022 State MS | Greenville Christian | QB
Smith has been an absolutely historic run so far at Greenville Christian. In his first game against MRA, Smith totaled 7 touchdowns himself, dominating in both the air and on the ground. Against Jackson Prep, it was more of the same. The senior signal caller is making himself known as the best quarterback in Mississippi this year.
Josh Sykes Josh Sykes 6'3" | 175 lbs | WR Park Place Christian Academy | 2022 MS | Park Place Christian | WR/DB
Totaling 5 catches for 100 yards and a score, 1 INT on defense, and 1 85 kick return for a TD, Sykes is beginning to wake people up across Mississippi. This guy seemingly gets no time off the field and produces at a high level in every facet of the game. Sykes helped the Crusaders to a 40-26 win and will take on Central Hinds Academy this week.
Marcus Harris Marcus Harris 5'9" | 225 lbs | RB Jackson Academy | 2022 State MS | Jackson Academy | RB
Harris has been one of the most consistent backs in the MAIS over his career, and that certainly hasn’t changed. He rushed for 112 yards and a score against Starkville Academy. The rushing duo of Harris and Collins is going to be hard for teams to stop this season. A lot of eyes on this backfield.
Looking ahead, this first week has a lot of great games taking place. Man is it exciting to be back in the swing of things!
