There were teams who went on the road to win games against tough out-of-state competition, while others shocked the box state by snapping significant losing streaks.
Now that the leaderboards are in the beginning stages of being filled, it is time to highlight some of the top performers from the opening week.
Below is a snapshot of the top five passers and rushers in order of yards gained.
Top five passing leaders from week one
Keegan Patterson Keegan Patterson 6'0" | 180 lbs | QB Longmont | 2022 State CO | Longmont | 6’0”, 180lbs | 2022 QB
Patterson is the week one passing yards leader after completing 27 of his 41 attempts for 385 yards and one touchdown in a hard-fought 49-43 loss to Chatfield. He also carried the ball 21 times for 88 yards and five touchdowns, a tie for the most rushing touchdowns in week one. The Trojans will be looking to bounce back when they host the Broomfield Eagles on Friday.
Brayden Dorman Brayden Dorman 6'5" | 200 lbs | QB Vista Ridge | 2023 State CO | Vista Ridge | 6’5”, 200lbs | 2023 QB
Dorman opened his junior season by completing 16 of his 31 attempts for 318 yards and four touchdowns in a hard-fought 26-20 win over a tough Windsor team. Dorman and the Wolves will be hosting a powerful 1-0 Dakota Ridge team on Friday night.
Isaac Sisneros Isaac Sisneros 5'8" | 150 lbs | QB Kennedy | 2023 State CO | Kennedy | 5’11”, 160lbs | 2023 QB
Sisneros completed 18 of his 35 passing attempts for 304 yards and three touchdowns in a 52-30 loss to Adams City. In addition to his passing stats, Sisneros also ran the ball six times for 59 yards and one touchdown. The Commanders will be looking to regroup for Friday’s away game against Alameda.
Noah Ramirez Noah Ramirez QB Mesa Ridge | 2022 State CO | Mesa Ridge | 6’0”, 147lbs | 2022 QB
Ramirez opened his season with an impressive performance, completing 18 of his 36 passing attempts for 298 yards and three touchdowns en route to a 31-28 win over Denver South. He also rushed seven times for 53 yards and one touchdown. Ramirez and the Grizzlies will be hosting a high-powered Palmer Ridge team on Friday.
Byce Gorr | Silver Creek | 6’0”, 165lbs | 2022 QB
Gorr helped lead his team to a 37-9 victory over Mountain View by completing 19 of his 25 pass attempts for 285 yards and three touchdowns. Gorr and the Raptors will be at home for their next contest against Centaurus on Friday.
Top five rushing leaders from week one
Bo Lapenna | Adams City | 6’0″, 213lbs | 2022 RB
Lapenna opened his senior season with a weekend-high of 260 rushing yards and four touchdowns off of 31 carries, which helped to lead his team to a dominant 52-30 win of Kennedy. Lapenna and the Eagles will be taking that momentum into a tough contest against Denver South team on Friday night.
Clay Robinson Clay Robinson RB Yuma | 2022 State CO | Yuma | 6’2” | 2022 QB
Robinson rushed for 242 yards and four touchdowns off of 14 carries during his season debut en route to a 41-6 victory over Burns on Friday. Yuma will be facing off against Strasburg in an away game this coming Friday.
Brycen Mhlanga | Littleton | 5’10”, 210lbs | 2023 RB
Mhlanga is week one’s third-leading rusher with 190 yards and five rushing touchdowns (tied for most rushing scores) on 11 carries on Friday. The Lions will continue their season against Thornton Friday, September 10th after having a bye this week.
Richie Caballero | Bear Creek | 5’8″, 205lbs | 2022 RB
The Bears opened their season with a 32-27 win over Lakewood with the help of Caballero’s 24 carries for 189 yards and four touchdowns performance. He was also useful in the passing game, catching two passes for a total of 19 yards. Caballero and the Bears will be looking to keep things rolling when they host the Greeley West Spartans this Friday.
Parker Ayres | Frederick | 5’9”, 175lbs | 2022 RB
Ayres had 16 carries for 188 yards and four touchdowns in game one, bringing him in at fifth on the leaderboard for rushing yards. The Warriors won their season opener with a 43-21 win over Canon City, now their sights will be set on the Pueblo Centennial game this coming Thursday.
