Here are a few major 7A games to watch for this weekend…
North Cobb vs. Milton
The biggest game in Georgia this weekend, like last weekend, will be held at North Cobb. After losing a tough game to 6A powerhouse Buford last weekend, the North Cobb Warriors, one of the favorites in 7A this year, will now have to face another powerhouse program this weekend in Milton. The Warriors were without star wide receiver De’Nylon Morrissette De’Nylon Morrissette 6'1" | 200 lbs | WR Brookwood | 2022 State GA against Buford but might be able to get him back this weekend. They’ll still need excellent QB play from junior Malachi Singleton Malachi Singleton 6'2" | 210 lbs | QB North Cobb | 2023 State GA and senior ATH Marquis Groves-Killebrew Marquis Groves-Killebrew 6'0" | 180 lbs | DB Brookwood | 2022 State GA . They’re loaded with talent, but they need to get fully healthy to reach their full potential.
The Milton Eagles check all thee boxes, but their best player, five-star DE Lebbeus Overton Lebbeus Overton 6'4" | 245 lbs | DL Milton | 2022 GA , is dealing with a foot injury. They’ll need him in a big way to try and handle North Cobb’s offense. They can run the ball well with senior Jordan McDonald Jordan McDonald 6'1" | 215 lbs | RB Milton | 2022 State GA , senior QB Devin Farrell Devin Farrell 6'0" | 190 lbs | QB Milton | 2022 State GA is playing well, and they have one of the best defenses in the state. They can absolutely go all the way in 7A this fall, and a big step in that direction is taking care of North Cobb this weekend.
Mill Creek vs. Norcross:
A matchup between two of the best in Gwinnett County, look for Mill Creek to give last year’s region champion a big battle this weekend. Norcross, who only lost one game last season, and are one of the best-coached teams in the state, is coming off an impressive 42-30 win in the opener last week against Hillgrove. They might not be full of D1 talent, but they have more than enough to make another deep playoff run this year.
Mill Creek played outstanding in their season opener thanks to QB Hayden Clark who tossed multiple TDs in their 43-10 victory. Clark is quietly becoming one of the top 2023 QBs in the state and is on the verge of a gigantic junior season. They played well offensively, but they played great defense against Parkview as well. Lading the team is ATH Caleb Downs Caleb Downs 5'11" | 180 lbs | DB Mill Creek | 2023 State GA , one of the nation’s top 2023 defensive backs. He can do a little bit of everything for Mill Creek and will continue to get some offensive reps in this game.
Grayson vs. McEachern:
After a tough opening loss last weekend to Creekside, the reigning 7A state champions are looking for a much-needed bounce-back will in week two. They still have a big question mark at QB and they clearly aren’t the dominating team they’ve been the past few years. They are loaded with young talent but need to build some chemistry offensively or they could be looking at a long, frustrating season. They are big and strong on the offensive line, but they have to find some success through the air sooner than later.
The Rams will have their hands full against a tough McEachern team, who after two seasons, is starting to look like one of the state’s top programs again. The Indians are coming off a 53-20 victory over Kell where they had a ton of success throwing the ball. Coastal Carolina QB commit Bryce Archie Bryce Archie 6'3" | 190 lbs | QB McEachern | 2022 State GA is playing very well to start his senior season and has a new favorite target in breakout Corky Kell star, Kaleb Webb, who scored four total touchdowns in the season opener. This will be a big matchup with lots of D1 talent on both teams.
Colquitt County vs. Westlake
A big North Georgia vs. South Georgia matchup, this isn’t an entirely 7A matchup as Westlake is in 6A, but this is still one of the top games across the state. The Colquitt County Packers are one of the biggest and most successful programs across the state and they’re looking to prove that they can still dominate teams in the northern part of the state. The Packers may not be as talented as Westlake, but they are one of the most well-coached teams across the state. The Packers took care of business against Marietta on the road last week as they squeaked out a 28-25 victory. This week they’ll be able to stay home and host Westlake, a talented team coming off an impressive 29-14 win over Archer.
The Lions, a 6A program, has multiple D1 prospects on defense to go along with a massive offensive line and impressive QB play. They’re big, strong, and have enough talent to make a deep playoff run. They’re one of the top teams in 6A and they’re looking to prove this weekend that they can play with anyone across the state.
