In the preseason scrimmage against Concordia Prep the Greyhounds created turnovers which was a focus for Coach Bach. Gilman’s defense was explosive, recording 3 interceptions, 2 fumbles, and a handful of sacks. On the offensive side of the ball veteran QB Matthew Parker had a good day, showing that he can put the ball anywhere on the field when given a clean pocket. Here we will dig a little deeper into the rising stars for this 2021 Gilman team.
Key Players:
Matthew Parker – 2023 QB 6’3 200lbs
Parker is a player that stayed on the scene this extended off season. He earned a U.S. National Combine invite, and an Under Armour All-American Camp invite. Parker also attended various camps such as “Raise the Bar” Camp at Mercer University, Penn State, Virginia Tech, Liberty, Duke, UMD, and Cincinnati. So far he has only taken an unofficial visit at WVU.
Concordia Scrimmage Highlights
Avery Jones-Allen Avery Jones-Allen 6'1" | 190 lbs | WR St. Frances | 2024 MD – 2023 WR 6’1 185lbs
I was able to evaluate Jones a lot this off season, he is a very reliable receiver. His route running has gotten better as he is learning how to execute different releases and moves within his routes. He always catches the ball, if its catchable with less than good coverage you can bet its a catch. He showcased his hands during the Greyhounds scrimmage where he brought in a handful of receptions for 2 touchdowns.
Kam Custis – 2024 DE/LB 6’3.5 250lbs
Kam had a monster day during the preseason scrimmage recording 5 sacks, 2 tackles for a loss, and 1 fumble recovery. This young athlete has a huge upside, great size and athleticism, with 3 years to grow as a football player. He plays with explosiveness off the edge and will be fun to watch this season. This is definitely a player to keep an eye on who may end up somewhere at the top of his class.
Kam Custis Scrimmage Performance: 5 Sacks 1 Fumble Recovery
Keyon Torain – 2022 RB 5’8 200lbs
Torain is Gilman’s big play guy going into the season. He has had the most touches out of these key players and is no stranger to the end zone. Strong runner who runs right through arm tackles and has exceptional speed to take it the distance. Torain has only taken a visit to Georgetown University so far but is receiving interest from multiple Ivy league schools such as, Yale, Harvard, Columbia, and Univ. of Penn. Expect this veteran to give the offense its spark whenever the hounds need it.
Dejuan Lane – 2024 WR/DB 6’2 185lbs
Lane stood out during Gilman’s scrimmage from start to finish. He made plays on both sides of the ball which will be huge for the hounds if he can stay consistent through the season. Offensively Lane hauled in a couple passes and 1 touchdown. On defense from his safety position he showed good zone coverage skills, came down and made sure tackles, and had an interception, untouched going the other way. He has taken a visit to Navy.
