He is ranked as the #4 defensive back in our Class of 2022 rankings and with good reason. In this article I will be breaking down his skill set and providing predictions about how I think he will perform this upcoming season. Let’s dive in!
Frame: 5´10 190lbs
Hudl: Dylan Muszynski Dylan Muszynski 5'8" | 160 lbs | DB Linn-Mar | 2022 State IA s Hudl
Skill Set: Clayton was both a 2nd Team All-State selection and a 1st Team All-Conference selection. If you look at his film, it’s easy to see why. With tremendous football IQ, Clayton makes many plays on the ball every single game. His ball hawking ability is right up there with the best defensive backs in the state. He is a phenomenal tackler, preventing a ton of big yardage plays. Clayton is great off of blitz calls and shoots through gaps with tremendous speed, making big plays that halt drives. He plays a hybrid form of safety for Linn-Mar, playing linebacker some plays. The one area I see room for growth in is patience. Sometimes he shoots through gaps a little too quickly, and this can create big yardage plays. If Clayton can keep things in front of him and develop that patience, he could easily play day one at a Division Two school or find a way onto a Division One roster.
Recruitment: Clayton has not received any big offers just yet, but attended Iowa and Iowa State camps along with an unofficial visit to St. Thomas. Coaches will be watching Clayton this upcoming season and he could end up expanding his list of colleges. I would expect him to get either a St. Thomas offer sometime during the season or perhaps he could get another FCS school to get interest. Otherwise, a school I think Clayton would be a beast at would be Minnesota State Mankato. They are already having a exceptional recruiting season and could land a steal in Clayton.
Predicted Stat Line: 67 Tackles, 54 Solo Tackles, 1.0 Sack, 6.5 Tackles for Loss, 2 Interceptions.
Standout Game: Linn-Mar @ Pleasant Valley Week 3. Pleasant Valley runs the ball a lot. Clayton will have to be extremely active this game, and I expect he could total 7-11 tackles and a tackle for loss.
Final Points: Clayton is easily one of the best defensive backs in the state. His tackling ability and knack for always finding the ball have already put him in the conversation for college ball. I believe if he works on patience, he could become an FCS Division One level talent. He is going to be the leader of what should be an elite Linn-Mar defense. In the past couple of years, Linn-Mar has had the talent, but not the results. This year Clayton has the opportunity to change that and help put Linn-Mar on the map.
