The loaded team was able to unleash a new weapon they’ve been holding off since 2019. Although both teams didn’t have their starting quarterbacks, the players that stepped up showed out.
RB Jamal Roberts Jamal Roberts 6'1" | 200 lbs | RB St. Mary's | 2023 State MO St. Mary’s c/o 23. Roberts is a freak of nature. Due to not playing last season, he was able to make up for it. Roberts ran through North’s defense, having eight carries for 173 yards. The 6-foot-2 194-pound power back was hard to take down and was too fast to catch. Roberts showed patience while reading his blocks, and as soon as he found an opening, he blew past defenders.
ATH Kevin Coleman Kevin Coleman 5'11" | 170 lbs | WR St. Mary's | 2022 State MO Jr. St. Mary’s c/o 23. Coleman stepped up and played the role at the quarterback position. He showed why he was one of the top athletes in the state. Coleman threw two touchdown passes and added a 5-yard rushing touchdown.
QB Jackson Sommerville Lutheran North c/o 23. Sommerville showed great promise for the Crusaders. Although the Dragons’ defense was all over, he still fought to the last minute throughout the game. Sommerville rushed for 34 yards and scored for the Crusaders late in the fourth quarter. He will be another player to watch for the Crusaders during the rest of the season.
RB Jaylin Carson Jaylin Carson 6'1" | 200 lbs | RB Lutheran North | 2022 State MO Lutheran North c/o 22. Carson did what he could for the Crusaders. He broke a couple runs down the field, showing great speed, and plowed through defenders. Carson led the offense, rushing for 144 yards on 20 carries.
DL Gabe Booker St. Mary’s c/o 23. Booker and the Dragons’ defense trampled through North all night. He played aggressive off the line and never let up. Booker gave the Dragons’ defense more momentum when he recovered a fumble from the Crusaders and ran it back for a touchdown.
