This past weekend, plenty of teams participated in Georgia’s Corky Kell classic games. Most of these teams were some of the top programs in the state, which in turn contained some of the top prospects in both the state, and country. In each of these games, there was plenty to be digested, as each team showed its own strengths and weaknesses. Below, we listed some of our favorite match-ups from this past weekend. We also suggest you check out some of the highlights for each game when you get a moment.
McEachern (53) vs Kell (20)
In this match-up, Senior WR Caleb Webb single-handedly dominated the Longhorns, as he managed to accumulate 3 receiving TD’s and a big kickoff return. The Indians were well balanced the entire game, as they managed to also have success in the running game, as Womack totaled over 70 yards, with Bodiford also having his own fair share of success on the ground. In the air, Bryce Archie Bryce Archie 6'3" | 190 lbs | QB McEachern | 2022 State GA completed 11-21 of his passes, which was enough to get the job done. For Kell, Davion Hampton also had his fair share of success in the air, but it wasn’t quite enough. By end of the game, he totaled 14-27 in passing, for over 200 yards and 2 TD’s. Moving forward, we expect both teams to have a good regular season, with a ton of upside in the future.
Collins Hill (36) vs Brookwood (10)
Perhaps one of the most anticipated games of the entire season ended in disappointment, as the Brookwood Broncos were not nearly as close to winning the match-up against Collins Hill as they were expected to be. A large reason behind this is due to the fact that one of the top players in the entire country, Travis Hunter Travis Hunter 6'1" | 165 lbs | ATH Collins Hill | 2022 State GA , completely took over for the Eagles. By the end of the game, Hunter had compiled 13 catches for 232 yards, 2 TD’s, an Interception, and a TD pass of his own. In addition to this, the Eagles QB, Sam Horn Sam Horn 6'4" | 190 lbs | QB Collins Hill | 2022 State GA , had finished the game with over 400 passing yards, with passes being completed to Hunter, Cam Pedro, and many other receivers. In addition to this, the Eagles also totaled over 100 rushing yards in their dominating win. On the other side of the field, star QB Dylan Lonergan Dylan Lonergan 6'2" | 200 lbs | QB Brookwood | 2023 State GA had a decent game for the Broncos outside of his 1 interception to Travis Hunter Travis Hunter 6'1" | 165 lbs | ATH Collins Hill | 2022 State GA . He threw for 197 yards, and a TD, while Stone Bonner remained consistent for him in the receiving game. The defense on the other hand did not hold up their end of the deal, resulting in the lopsided loss that they experienced.
Johns Creek (26) vs Gainesville (10)
Even though the game was called due to lightning, the two teams managed to have a good bout during the time in which they were able to play. The Gladiators had an overall great game, and showed flashes of greatness as they managed to perform well in the air, and on the ground, as both QB Kyle Durham Kyle Durham 6'1" | 185 lbs | QB Johns Creek | 2022 GA , and RB Tylan Johnson both had strong showings. By the time the game was called, Durham had totaled 155 yards, for 2 TD’s, while Johnson had finished the game with over 140 yards. Unfortunately, these great stats came as bad news to the Gainesville Elephants, as they struggled against both the air and ground game. Moving forward, Gainesville has a long road ahead of them if this is how their season may play out. Good news for them is that there is a long road ahead, with plenty of time and room for improvement.
