While others are upcoming stars to look out for this next season. These are players to look out for not in any particular order. Looking at their size and skill sets.
Avery Johnson Avery Johnson 6'2" | 175 lbs | QB Maize | 2023 State KS – Maize High – 6’2″ 170lbs – 2023 – Avery is rated as a four star recruit currently and the number two dual threat quarterback in the nation for his class. He has sloid footwork in the pocket and keeps his feet moving. With his feet moving he is able to escape potential sacks and keep plays alive and improvise. He has a very strong arm and accurate at every distance. He makes quick decisions, and has good reads along with that. He also has good speed and creates plays. His playmaking ability is great with both his arm and his legs. The future is bright for this Junior.
Weston Fries Weston Fries 6'2" | 170 lbs | QB Salina South | 2023 KS – Salina South – 6’0″ 160lbs – 2023 – This prospect has great feet in the pocket and usually makes the right decision, most of the time his timing is great. His feet and speed make him a tough guy to bring down for sacks. He has a good arm and accurately hits his targets with consistency. Often seems very comfortable in the pocket and willing to throw the deep ball. Weston, I believe, is one of the most underrated quarterbacks in his class. As a sophomore last season he had 16 touchdowns to 9 interceptions, but I see this being dramatically different this coming season.
Gabe Welch Gabe Welch 6'2" | 195 lbs | QB Arkansas City | 2023 State KS – Arkansas City – 6’1″ 180lbs – 2023 – Welch is also a junior this coming season and led the Bulldogs to a state title game last year. They might have lost the game, but the accolade as a sophomore is a big deal. Gabe has good feet and steps up through the pocket and deliver deep balls with great accuracy. He has a solid arm and able to make most throws from the pocket. He improvises and make plays well on his feet with decent speed added to that. If he minimizes the turnovers Gabe would be up there for top of his class.
Brady Strausz Brady Strausz 6'2" | 185 lbs | ATH Andover | 2023 State KS – Andover – 6’2″ 185lbs – 2023 – Brady is another Junior on the list that also had a solid sophomore season. He has a huge arm and solid decision making. Most of his throws are coming from on the move and has accuracy on the run. When he is in the pocket has a okay feet, but has solid long ball accuracy. Strausz is also a very solid runner and willing to take hits to make throws. His play action game is probably the strongest part of his game. He is looking to boost the Trojans into the title push.
Parker Kavanagh Parker Kavanagh 6'3" | 195 lbs | QB Salina Central | 2022 State KS – Salina Central – 6’3″ 195lbs – As the only Senior on this list Kavanagh had a very strong showing through his junior year. He has a big frame and solid speed to go along with his size. That combination makes him a very tough runner to bring down in the open field. He has very good feet in the pocket and had a 55% completion percentage last year. He is a D1 caliber player especially if he can get the completion percentage up and make a possible title run.
