For one reason or another, many schools never got in the season many had hoped for – and you can add Key West to that growing list.
For head coach John Hughes and the Conchs, just getting in the six games that they did was certainly something that turned out to be more of a benefit than most.
Posting a 4-2 record, losing to rising 2A power Dade Christian (34-14) and the always tough Miami Northwestern (28-20), what Key West did was groom prospects for the future – as the 2022 class had the opportunity to learn from those losses – as well as grow from those wins.
Those victories against Fort Lauderdale Westminster Academy, Archbishop McCarthy, Surge Academy and Somerset Academy Silver Palms will go a long way this season – as the conchs feature quality senior class.
That group includes impressive Mike Cates (WR/DB, 6-2, 180 – 3.531 GPA, 960 SAT), all-around student/athlete Preston Herce Preston Herce RB Key West | 2022 FL (QB/Athlete, 6-1, 210 – 4.406 GPA, 1060 SAT), physical Jack Molder (LB, 6-0, 195 – 3.225 GPA, 810 SAT), Jeremiah Osborne (RB/LB, 6-1, 215 – 3.0 GPA), Nathan Outon (OL/DL, 5-11, 255 – 3.33 GPA, 900 SAT), Brock Perkins (WR/OLB, 6-5, 175 – 4.204 GPA, 930 SAT) and versatile Cameron Watson (RB/DB/Athlete, 6-3, 170 – 3.5 GPA, 950 SAT).
KEEPING AN EYE ON THE FUTURE
As gifted as the Class of 2022 will be, there is a feeling that the rising juniors in 2023 will have plenty to add as well.
Prospects like Auggie Berrlange (OL/DL, 6-1, 290 – 4.0 GPA), Jacob LaValle (RB/LB, 5-10, 195 – 3.721 GPA), Andre Otto (OL/DL, 6-5, 285 – 3.944 GPA), James Reynolds (RB/LB, 6-1, 205 – 4.158 GPA) and two-way performer Montrell Trimmings (RB/LB, 6-0, 180 – 3.538 GPA).
Also, keep an eye on the sophomore (2024) class that has prospects Clerf Alexandre (RB/DB, 5-9, 155 – 4.0 GPA), Eitenne Brondson (WR/DE, 6-3, 180 – 2.5 GPA) and two-way lineman Ralph Richie (6-0, 270 – 4.125 GPA).
