There’s nothing quite like South Georgia football, and Class 7A Region 1 has everything you look for in major high school football.
Here’s how the teams look going into the 2021 season…
Lowndes:
One of the top teams in the state for most of last year, the Vikings will be looking to make a big state-championship like run this fall with senior QB and Miami commit, Jacurri Brown Jacurri Brown 6'4" | 205 lbs | QB Lowndes | 2022 State GA . One of the better QB prospects in the entire 2022 class, Brown is such a dynamic talent who can really run and has great size already at 6-foot-4 205-pounds. IF he continues to develop as a passer and keep improving his arm overall, there might not be many defense who can stop the high-powered Lowndes offense this fall.
They made a big playoff run last year, losing to the eventual runner-up in Collins Hill, but still coming away with an impressive 10-2 season. Playmaking receiver Chase Belcher will be back at wide receiver and he’ll be a go-to option for Brown in the passing game. He can also turn around and play defense as he made 6 INTs as a defensive back last year.
Defensively, Lowndes has DB Josh Pickett returning who had 70 tackles last year as a a sophomore. They’ll need to replace a lot of talent, but that just means new players will step up and make a name for themselves this fall.
Colquitt County:
The raining region champs, Colquitt County is one of the best programs in all of Georgia and they’ll have one of the biggest playmakers on their side in Dijmon Wheeler Dijmon Wheeler 6'1" | 185 lbs | WR Colquitt County | 2022 State GA . The 6-foot-1 185-pounder is a big play waiting to happen and will try to reel in a lot of balls from whoever is throwing his way this fall. Running back Charlie Pace is coming off a 500+ yard season as a sophomore and should see more opportunities come his way as a junior. Defensively, junior Antwan Daniels is a name to know at linebacker and could see some teams start to show some interest this fall.
This team is replacing a lot of talent, but all they know how to do is win. They’ve got some tough, talented young talent coming through and they’ll push for another region title this fall just like they do every other year.
Tift County:
A young team that played better and better as the season went along last year, Tift County is a tough game for everyone week in and week out. They may not always be the most talented team, but they do fight and crawl every Friday night. On offense, junior running back Tyler Parker should give them a start as he rushed for six touchdowns last year. They’ll have to figure out a lot of things offensively, but if they continue to improve from last year, it will all depend on the defense.
Led by one of the nation’s top defensive lineman, UGA commit Tyre West Tyre West 6'3" | 280 lbs | DL Tift County | 2022 State GA , Tift County’s defense could give a lot of teams trouble this fall. West is an imposing, dominant lineman who can really disrupt an offense, but they play well defensively as a whole. There’s a lot of hungry players looking to stand out this fall.
Camden County:
There’s a lot of talent down in Camden County, but it needs to come together in a big way this fall. The Wildcats are coming off a disappointing 5-6 season last year, and changes need to be made if they want to improve. They were ineffective running the ball last year and had trouble scoring much throughout the season. Look for senior running back Jamie Felix Jamie Felix 5'10" | 205 lbs | RB Camden County | 2022 State GA , a two-sport standout, to have a big final season as a senior this fall.
