Nearly two dozen high school kicked off the annual Metro Baton Rouge 7-on-7 League across five different sites in mid-June.
Zachary hosted Central (Baton Rouge), Port Allen and Woodlawn (Baton Rouge) in the second week of action.
Here are a half dozen of the most notable performances.
Calvin Collier — 6-0, 160 WR — Central (Baton Rouge) (2022)
The running threat of athletic, fast quarterback [player_tooltip player_id="136493" first="Jonathan" last="Swift"] II figures to make the Wildcats more effective in the fall than during the summer. And a pair of touchdown catches against Zachary by the long senior wide receiver — once on a deep pass on which he kept his balance, eluded the defensive back and darted to the goal line and another leaping in the back of the end zone — were exciting to see for the passing game against a good Broncos secondary locked in on coverage.
[player_tooltip player_id="138486" first="Rickie" last="Collins"] — 6-3, 180 QB — Woodlawn (Baton Rouge) (2023)
The rising junior quarterback would have liked a couple passes back in the morning’s finale against Zachary, but had another strong performance overall moving the ball quickly up and down the field against Central and Port Allen and competing well against his Broncos counterpart to set the stage for an intriguing regular-season matchup between the teams this fall.
[player_tooltip player_id="138485" first="Eli" last="Holstein"] — 6-3, 215 QB — Zachary (2023)
Much of the same assessment could be said for Holstein, who led his team to a perfect record with a final strike in the competitive and even chippy battle with the Panthers. Even with [player_tooltip player_id="63552" first="Chris" last="Hilton"] Jr. and Kenson Tate now off to college, Holstein has a bevy of exciting weapons at his disposal and is helping coach the next generation along to better the options in lineup alongside rising seniors [player_tooltip player_id="136512" first="Charles" last="Robertson"] and [player_tooltip player_id="136520" first="Kameran" last="Senegal"].
Carlton Johnson II — 5-10, 160 DB — Zachary (2022)
Johnson’s safety partner, rising junior [player_tooltip player_id="138305" first="Kylin" last="Jackson"], is one of Louisiana’s top safeties, and rising senior [player_tooltip player_id="138316" first="Cody" last="Smith"] has developed into a lockdown cornerback capable of shutting down one half of the field. Highlighted by a timely interception deep over the middle, a consistent performance from Johnson similar to his on this morning could bode huge for the title-hopeful Broncos’ defense.
[player_tooltip player_id="136512" first="Charles" last="Robertson"] — 6-3, 180 WR — Zachary (2022)
One day after running a 4.5-second 40-yard dash, Robertson was back into his highlight reel bag of physical, leaping grabs over opposing defensive backs. That combination and his continued chemistry with Holstein are setting the table for a big fall for the senior.
Marcus Stewart Jr. — 5-10, 180 DB — Woodlawn (2022)
The rising senior deflected one of Holstein’s passes, which rising junior teammate [player_tooltip player_id="138321" first="Dezaray" last="Delmore"] Jr. located, snatched from the air and brought back the other way. Both players had solid days overall, giving up a couple catches, but leaving opposing quarterbacks frustrated more often than not. Their development and consistency in a secondary that should already enjoy rising junior cornerback [player_tooltip player_id="138307" first="Jordan" last="Matthews"] locking down one half of the field will be a key storyline for a Woodlawn team anticipating its best season in several years.
