The number one ranked player in the state, Gavin Wimsatt Gavin Wimsatt 6'3" | 200 lbs | QB Owensboro | 2022 State KY , from Owensboro, is a talented dual threat quarterback who can hurt opposing defenses with both his arm and his feet. The top wide receiver in the class is Dane Key Dane Key 6'2" | 170 lbs | WR Lexington Frederick Douglass | 2022 State KY of Lexington Frederick Douglass who is also the fourth ranked player overall. Key displays both sure hands and explosive speed at the wide receiver position.
Defensively, the linebacking position is very strong with seven players landing a spot in the top fifty rankings. The group is led by Davis Joyner Davis Joyner 6'3" | 200 lbs | LB Lexington Frederick Douglass | 2022 State KY , a teammate of Key at Frederick Douglass. Joyner is 6’3” 200 with excellent speed and quickness. He is fast off the edge and can catch plays form behind as well as consistently being the first man down on kickoff coverage. Five defensive backs and five defensive linemen also found their way into the top fifty.
Nearly half of the top players in the state come from schools in the two hot beds for Kentucky high school football, Louisville and Lexington. Three of the top twenty-five players come from Louisville Male. Male went 8-2 last season with both losses coming at the hands of Louisville Trinity. The number two player in the rankings, defensive end Selah Brown Selah Brown 6'2" | 260 lbs | DL Louisville Male | 2022 State KY along with wide receiver Vinny Anthony Vinny Anthony 6'1" | 170 lbs | WR Louisville Male | 2022 State KY and linebacker Elijah Manning Elijah Manning 6'1" | 230 lbs | LB Louisville Male | 2022 State KY , all attend Male. Lexington Frederick Douglass also has multiple players in the rankings. Besides Key and Joyner, defensive back Ty Bryant Ty Bryant 5'11" | 170 lbs | DB Lexington Frederick Douglass | 2022 State KY , quarterback Sam Cornett, and linebacker Caden Johnson Caden Johnson 6'2" | 230 lbs | LB Lexington Frederick Douglass | 2022 State KY also represent the Broncos in the top fifty.
While Louisville and Lexington claim a lot of the talent in the class of 2022, many players come from smaller towns and rural areas of the state. Schools in the eastern part of Kentucky around Ashland, Pikeville and Paintsville have players that rank in the top fifty of the state. The Covington area of northern Kentucky with programs like Dixie Heights traditionally have some of the state’s top talent. The western and southwestern part of the state from Owensboro to Bowling Green to Paducah play a high quality of football as well. Kentucky high school football is getting better and better each year, and the class of 2022 is a prime example.
