In more recent years, however, players like Jeff Brohm, Brian Brohm, and Tim Couch have helped Kentucky high school football develop a rich tradition of talented quarterbacks. The class of 2022 is deep at the quarterback position. As a matter of fact, eight signal callers make it in to the top fifty of the initial Prep Redzone rankings. Representing various size schools, these quarterbacks have the tools to lead their teams to success this fall.
Gavin Wimsatt Gavin Wimsatt 6'3" | 200 lbs | QB Owensboro | 2022 State KY 6’3” 200 QB Owensboro
The number one player in the state and the top quarterback is Gavin Wimsatt Gavin Wimsatt 6'3" | 200 lbs | QB Owensboro | 2022 State KY . The Rutgers commit is an outstanding dual-threat quarterback that can destroy a defense with his arm and feet. He is accurate when throwing from the pocket and when on the move. Gavin has excellent arm strength and can throw effectively back across his body. Either by design or when scrambling, he consistently makes big runs to keep drives alive.
Caden Veltkamp Caden Veltkamp 6'5" | 215 lbs | QB Bowling Green South Warren | 2022 State KY 6’5” 215 Bowling Green South Warren
This tall and impressive dropback quarterback can fit the football through small windows with velocity. He is a natural thrower who stands tall in the pocket with a high release point. Veltkamp can evade a heavy rush and still put the ball on target. He displays an excellent touch on the deep ball keeping it away from defenders and letting his receivers run under it.
Cole Pennington Cole Pennington 6'2" | 195 lbs | QB Lexington Sayre | 2022 State KY 6’2” 195 Lexington Sayre
Pennington displays poise in the pocket even in the face of a heavy rush. He holds the football till his receivers get open, then delivers a strike. At the same time, he isn’t afraid to take a hit as he releases the football. Pennington is a pro-style quarterback with good mechanics and an over-the-top release. Cole is currently committed to Marshall University.
Joe Humphreys Joe Humphreys 6'4" | 195 lbs | QB Owensboro Daviess County | 2022 State KY 6’4” 195 Owensboro Daviess County
Another dual-threat quarterback, Humphreys can escape from the pocket and make needed yardage with his legs. He runs the option well and is tough to bring down due his size and lower body strength. As good of a runner as he is, he still is primarily an exceptional passer who has a rocket arm who can throw when standing tall in the pocket or on the move.
Sam Cornett 6’7” 225 Lexington Frederick Douglass
Seeing over the oncoming rush is no problem for this tall impressive dropback quarterback. Cornett has great command of the offense as shown by his ability to hit his receivers as they come out of their break. Sam stands tall in the pocket and delivers the football with both velocity and touch.
Treyvon Jefferson Treyvon Jefferson 6'5" | 195 lbs | QB Hopkinsville | 2022 State KY 6’5” 195 Hopkinsville
Jefferson is one of the most gifted dual-threat quarterbacks in the Bluegrass State. He demonstrates the ability to throw with accuracy from the pocket or when sprinting out. He can fit the football through small windows even when on the move. Jefferson can also destroy opposing defenses when he tucks the football away and runs.
Isaac McNamee Isaac McNamee 6'4" | 215 lbs | QB Pikeville | 2022 State KY 6’4” 215 Pikeville
McNamee is a pro-style quarterback but still is very mobile. He displays accuracy even though his release is a little low and sidearm. He is still able to throw the football with good velocity and placement. McNamee is really impressive at hitting his receivers as they break out of their routes or as they clear coverage.
Sam Cornett 6’3” 180 Oldham County
Sam has terrific instincts in the pocket as he steps up and slides while keeping his eyes trained downfield. He has excellent release timing and knows the speed and physical abilities of his receivers. Cornett knows when to put the football under his arms and displays both elusiveness and toughness as a runner.
