For Lake Region (Eagle Lake) head football coach Geoff Bangley and his Thunder, losing has come too easy – and while 2020 can be called a “wash” – with the pandemic taking hold – this spring and off-season have become vital for this program moving forward.
Since taking over at his alma mater for Jason Stokes two years ago, Bangley has been trying to turn this thing around – and while we can forget about the 0-7 finish this past season, the Thunder also have to learn from the setbacks and the negatives in order to get better.
Because it’s his school and he’s been with the football program for seven years, Bangley understands what needs to be done, and the players have to buy in to what this staff is trying to do.
Helping this program take those positive steps forward include Class of 2022 seniors Nylique Copeland (WR/S, 6-0, 185 – 2.7 GPA), Jarvis Johnson (H-Back/LB, 5-8, 200), Michael McLaurin (WR/S, 5-8, 135), Edgar Olmos (OL, 5-9, 240 – 2.6 GPA), David Reynoso (S, 5-9, 160 – 3.3 GPA) and versatile Roger Rodriguez (WR/CB, 5-9, 150).
LOOKING INTO THE FUTURE
As this program searches for playmakers and prospects who want to win in a very competitive area, it will be the underclassmen who will be counted on heavily – with Class of 2023 talent Jayden Ferrell (TE/OLB, 6-1, 215) and Clifton Morris (WR/CB, 5-11, 160) making a major contribution.
Perhaps the place that we all need to look is with the 2024 class of talented sophomores. Among that group are Omarion James (H-Back/OLB, 5-9, 218), Javarious Johnson (RB/CB, 5-9, 195), Devontae Kendrick (OL/DL, 6-3, 320), Brenton McKinney (TE/OLB, 5-10, 185), Matthew Medrano (WR/CB, 5-9, 155) and Nazhier Wilson (RB/LB, 5-9, 200).
