Continue ReadingYear in and year out, the region of Northern California stemming from just North of Santa Barbara all the way to the Oregon border is always one of the most under-recruited areas on the West Coast. There are plenty of top tier prospects that will go on to play Power Five ball and some even will play on Sundays, but the majority are quality high school players that will make a big impact at any collegiate level. Below, we will dive into the film of Part I of some of the most under-recruited prospects Northern California has to offer.
QB Nicholas Coronado, Kimball HS
Coronado is one of the top quarterbacks in the valley and put up huge numbers in the short Spring 2021 season. He displays nice pocket mobility and can feel pressure/step up and make accurate throws downfield and while on the run. He is a running threat with nice open field speed and has a quick release and strong arm that can fit the ball into tight windows from 35+ yards out. He does a good job at moving defenders eyes and working through his progressions, while putting good velocity and air under his balls on vertical routes and against tight coverage.
TE Tyler Hoffman, San Ramon Valley HS
Hoffman is a lengthy tight end that shows plus strength and range and is one of the top tight ends in the region. He is very fluid in space and is a natural pass catcher from all body angles while able to stick his toe in the ground and get vertical in a hurry with nice open field speed and deceptive agility in the short area. On tape, he is also a willing blocker that runs through defenders and plays tough and physical while consistently finishing blocks and getting his hands on players in a hurry. Overall, he is a very balanced tight end that has division 1 abilities.
QB Lawrence Stell, Washington Union HS
Stell is a terrific overall athlete at the quarterback position and is a long strider with open field third level speed. He is a multi-sport prospect that is a true dual-threat at the position. On tape, he is still raw but has tons of untapped potential with a solid arm and accuracy through all three levels of the defense. He can throw both out-breaking and in-breaking routes while anticipating pressure from different angles in the pocket. Due to his versatility and size/athleticism, he could also potentially switch positions at the next level and offers nice versatility.
RB Jabari Phillips Jabari Phillips 5'10" | 180 lbs | RB Golden Valley | 2022 State CA , Golden Valley HS
Phillips is one of the top backs across all of Northern California within the 2022 class. On tape, he is an explosive player with terrific lower body strength, contact balance and lateral movement abilities in traffic. He shows good initial burst through the first level and is effective both vertically and laterally when needed while jump-cutting or hitting tight windows. He runs behind his pads with natural forward lean and has a nice combination of elusiveness and power through first contact and ankle tackles. The 2022 prospect is a FCS+ caliber prospect that is flying under the radar due to the pandemic, but should start to draw college interest soon.
DB Marcus Chan, Bishop Diego HS
Chan is a true safety and one of the best available defensive backs in the 2022 class within the Greater Santa Barbara area. He offers plus size at the position and is a disciplined player with natural ball skills/high point ability and can return when needed with solid open field speed. He also shows he breaks well to ball carriers and brings a nice thump upon contact in the box and open field. A very high IQ player, he plays with good eye discipline and baits quarterbacks into bad throws while able to jump routes without wasted movement. He should start to see some FCS+ and D-II-III level interest come his way in the coming months.
