In fact, it’s entirely the opposite.
In Part 2 of this series, we look at five of the 10 players who did just that. They’re all special players who have began or will begin jumping up various recruiting boards in the coming months.
Trent Pearman Trent Pearman 6'2" | 180 lbs | QB Daniel | 2022 State SC , QB, Daniel
Of all the numbers we loved from Pearman’s breakout 2020 season, the touchdown-interception ratio is the one that opposing defensive coordinators struggled with the most. Those 35 touchdowns were eye-opening. However, the fact that he threw just two interceptions in 210 attempts was mind-boggling.
Andre Washington Andre Washington 6'4" | 200 lbs | QB Ridge View | 2022 State SC , QB, Ridge View
Washington had a bit of a learning curve to Class 5A football last fall (during an already trying year), but all things considered he performed pretty darn well. He easily eclipsed 1,000 yards of total offense and was responsible for 16 total touchdowns. Now, he’s got even more weapons and is primed for a huge senior season.
Cade Purgason Cade Purgason 6'3" | 295 lbs | OL Catawba Ridge | 2022 State SC , OL, Catawba Ridge
Catawba Ridge is a program that shot into the upper echelons of the South Carolina football scene in a hurry, and Purgason is a huge reason why. The 6-foot-4, 290-pound left tackle is responsible for protecting one of the most recruited players in the state in rising sophomore quarterback Jadyn Davis Jadyn Davis 6'1" | 185 lbs | QB Providence Day | 2024 State NC , and in the process Purgason stands out on his own merits.
Tray Franklin Tray Franklin 6'6" | 280 lbs | OL Ridge View | 2022 State SC , OL, Ridge View
College recruiters are falling in love with Franklin’s 6-foot-6 frame, seeing as a starting block for a weight routine that can’t be taught. And after another year playing in front of Washington (and Washington behind Franklin) the big tackle’s star is only going to continue to rise in the coming months.
Dontrell Stradford Dontrell Stradford 6'2" | 310 lbs | DL Camden | 2022 State SC , DL, Camden
In a perfect world, opposing play-callers would simply find a way to double team Stradford. When it comes to lining up against a talented Camden front seven, though, that usually isn’t an option. Stratford is big and he’s explosive off the snap, and very few offensive linemen in Class 3A football are prepared to handle him one-on-one.
