This is a deep class with talent from top to bottom in it. Before summer rolls around, we took some time to come out with our new edition of our 2022 rankings in Mississippi.
Getting things started, there has been no change at the No. 1 spot. Germantown’s Branson Robinson Branson Robinson 5'11" | 220 lbs | RB Germantown | 2022 State MS looks like the next big time back out of Mississippi. The rising senior has preformed well at camps this offseason, boasting sub-4.5 40 times. He has received comparisons to Nick Chubb on social media. Oh, and by the way, he won a state championship in powerlifting. It’s been a great spring for the future star back. Robinson is the complete package at RB and has suitors in Alabama, Georgia, Clemson, and LSU among others. You will see a lot of big time coaches at Germantown High games this upcoming fall.
At the No. 2 spot, Union’s Kenyon Clay Kenyon Clay 6'0" | 210 lbs | RB Union | 2022 State MS jumps up the rankings. Previously, we had Clay ranked as a quarterback/athlete. There really was no telling what he could be at the next level because he was so good at so many things last season. Clay has had a great off season and committed to Southern Mississippi to top things off. USM took Clay as a running back, so that is where he will be in our rankings as well. Clay has great size and speed for the position and is capable of handling the ball 20+ times a game. He was previously ranked as our 4th best quarterback in the initial rankings.
At the No. 3 spot, Columbia’s Omar Johnson Omar Johnson 5'10" | 185 lbs | RB Columbia | 2022 State MS makes the list. Things have been quiet for the rising senior running back. Johnson isn’t a guy that is super busy on social media, so he hasn’t been talked about a ton these past few months. Rest assured, this is a guy that can play. He has great speed in the open field with the ability to cut and make people miss in space. Look for him to take on the summer camp circuit by storm and produce at a high level. Johnson currently lists an offer from Mississippi State, but that number should increase soon. Johnson was previously ranked at No. 2.
At No. 4, Kemper County’s Dicenzo Miller Jr. has made a name for himself this offseason. While he isn’t necessarily the biggest, he competes well and has had timed well at camps this off season. Miller has looked impressive everywhere he has been and has added multiple offers after his performances. WKU, Marshall, and the local junior colleges have been some of the front runners for Miller, but he will look to continue adding offers with a big senior campaign on the horizon. Look for this guy to have another video game like year. Miller was previously ranked at No. 3.
Finishing things off, newcomer Carlos Brown Carlos Brown 5'9" | 195 lbs | RB Stone | 2022 State MS makes the top 5 after previously being unranked. The Stone product has put up great numbers in the weight room this off season and has added offers from Southern Mississippi and Mississippi Gulf Coast. Last year’s film looked great too. Brown was able to bounce off contact and catch out of the backfield well, making him a pretty complete prospect at running back. Brown hasn’t attended any camps yet, but he will have plenty of opportunities to this summer. Quite the sleeper right now, but the secret should be out soon enough.
This year’s running back group is deeper than previous classes in Mississippi. Even the next 3-4 guys in the ranking could be arguable top 5 backs in the state. Keep watching these guys this season and find out where they will be playing next season!
