I try to go into these as blind as possible. I don’t want to know names. I don’t want to know who has offers and who doesn’t. Therefore, I likely will miss guys who are on college radars. On the other hand, I might notice someone who is not on the shortlist of college recruits. Here are a few notes on who stood out to me. For more notes on the guys in the trenches, check out Nate’s outstanding story.
Peyton Lange Peyton Lange 6'9" | 340 lbs | OL Minnehaha Academy/SMB | 2023 State MN – sophomore SMB
His size made him impossible not to notice. Size is just the start of what impressed me about this athlete. He moves well for his size and keeps his hips low for his 6’9″ frame. Lange’s initial punch was maybe his most impressive trait. The tackle stopped a few guys and stood them up just with his initial punch off the line of scrimmage.
Patrick Lavin Patrick Lavin 6'2" | 285 lbs | OL St. Anthony Village | 2022 State MN – junior St. Anthony Village
I came away most impressed with Lavin. As a center, Lavin used great lateral movement and quick feet. He is not the tallest athlete, but he makes up for it with a solid upper body and – although I think he had a smile on his face the whole day – a bit of a nasty streak. I don’t think Lavin has seen a squat rack he didn’t like, as his thick lower body allowed him to stone bigger athletes in their tracks.
Gavin Falk Gavin Falk 6'6" | 300 lbs | OL Edina | 2022 State MN – junior Edina
Falk showed solid hips and great footwork in the individual drills. He was up and down during one-on-ones, but he lined up against some of the best guys on the defensive side. What impressed me was his compete level. Even when he got beat, he wouldn’t back down and hung in there even when he got overpowered.
Gage McManemy Gage McManemy 6'4" | 250 lbs | OL Lake Crystal-Welcome-Memorial | 2023 State MN – sophomore Lake Crystal-Welcome Memorial
McManemy is another big man with good feet. Like most of the guys on this list, he kept his hips and base low. In the one on ones, McManemy used his footwork to stay with an outside rusher. He showed some position flexibility working well on the inside against some of the better defensive linemen.
Jai Kalvik Jai Kalvik 6'5" | 255 lbs | OL Hopkins | 2023 State MN – sophomore Hopkins
Two reps during one on ones stood out for me. From the tackle position, Kalvik used quick feet and good hands to keep his man on the outside when the defender tried to get the corner. Then, he stoned an inside move from the left tackle spot.
Ethan Fischer Ethan Fischer 6'9" | 265 lbs | OL Maple River | 2022 State MN – junior Maple River
When Fischer puts on some weight, he could be a problem for defensive linemen. He is still raw and needs some work on his technique and feet, but as he gets more technique work, his length will be an asset for any program looking for a right or left tackle.
