St. John’s defeated Good Counsel this past Friday, with a final score of 27-20. This classic WCAC rivalry game did not disappoint, as it often doesn’t, and Good Counsel nearly completed an overtime forcing comeback, outscoring the Cadets 14-7 in the second half. St. John’s got off to a hot start early, scoring the first 20 unanswered points, and the game seemed over before it even started. This couldn’t have been further from the case, and the game was a close one that came down to the wire. Below we analyze and break down the performances of players from each program who showed flashes of greatness during Friday night’s game. ST. JOHN’s – 27 2022 5’6 170 RB [player_tooltip player_id="121525" first="Jamar" last="Curtis"] [player_tooltip player_id="121525" first="Jamar" last="Curtis"] absolutely stifled the Good Counsel defense in the first half. The opening touchdown of the game was an incendiary 75 yard touchdown run by Jamar, and it was truly jaw dropping to watch him blaze down the field. There’s no question that he is a collegiate level running back, but the only critique scouts could have is his size. However, once you watch him preform it’s abundantly clear that his speed and athletic ability far outweigh his stature. There’s no question that [player_tooltip player_id="121525" first="Jamar" last="Curtis"] will make a splash at the D1 level if he’s given the opportunity. 2021 6’0 190 DB [player_tooltip player_id="90362" first="Xavier" last="Terry"] There’s no better representation of St. Johns’ elite secondary than [player_tooltip player_id="90362" first="Xavier" last="Terry"]. He was lockdown for the entire game even when presented with some very difficult matchups. Good Counsel quarterback Nino Marzullo and the Falcon offense had an aggressive game plan, but, even with some late success, Xavier and the Cadet secondary was just too much for them to handle. He’s really proving himself as one of the top defensive backs in the area, and the Senior will certainly be suiting up at the next level very soon. GOOD COUNSEL – 20 2024 6’2 180 QB Nino Marzullo There’s no other WCAC quarterback with more long term potential than Nino Marzullo. The dual threat quarterback was an absolute bulldozer in Friday’s game, and he was the heart and souls of the Falcons’ offense from start to finish. He and the Falcons nearly erased a 21 point deficit to take the contest to overtime but they came up just short. Even so, Nino protected the football and displayed quick yet decisive decision making. While they lost this game, there’s no doubt that Freshman Nino Marzullo has an extremely bright future. This Good Counsel program does too. 2021 5’9 200 RB [player_tooltip player_id="90386" first="Sean" last="Aaron"] Lined up alongside Good Counsel’s dual threat quarterback was punishing power back [player_tooltip player_id="90386" first="Sean" last="Aaron"]. Against a rock solid St. John’s defensive line, Aaron’s performance displayed his never back down mentality. The Senior running back really showed his experience and poise in this game, and it’s exciting to think about the big things he will do next year at Frostburg State University. His yards after contact must be leading the conference this year, and he will certainly look to showcase his talents yet again next week versus DeMatha. 2024 6’4 190 WR Elijah Moore There are few athletes in the entire DMV area that are comparable to Elijah Moore. He always attracts the number one corner as well as double teams from opposing secondaries, however, he also always preforms well and makes a huge impact on his offense’s success. His ridiculous reach and wingspan both make him near uncoverable at the high school level, and the positive relationship he has with his quarterback and classmate Nino Marzullo should terrify every other program in the WCAC. Over the next four seasons, watch out for the Good Counsel Falcons as Elijah Moore continues to develop and improve.
