The Division II basketball Championships were this past weekend in Cookeville and there were a few gridiron stars that played on the hardwood as well.
[player_tooltip player_id="101872" first="Dietrick" last="Pennington"] - OG Evangelical Christian - The Clemson signee had 2 points (1-1 shooting) and 2 rebounds off the bench in 9 minutes of play before fouling out of the semifinal loss to Goodpasture Christian. Standing at 6’5" and 326 lbs, Dietrick was a bit too physical for the officials liking - even running over another player at one point. Look forward to seeing this future Tiger in the ACC in the fall.
[player_tooltip player_id="102150" first="Grayson" last="Morgan"] - OT Montgomery Bell Academy - The junior had 9 points (4-6 shooting, 1-2 from the line) and 6 rebounds in 16 minutes of play as a starter in the semifinal win over Knoxville Catholic. He followed that up with 6 points (3-3 shooting), 4 rebounds and 1 assist in 12 minutes of play as a starter in the championship win over Brentwood Academy. Morgan has picked up 9 FBS offers in the last month, including 2 from the SEC. At 6’6" 255 lbs, Grayson lines up at left tackle for the Big Red. A physical run blocker, he helps clear the way for a run heavy offense when he’s not busy winning basketball championships.
[player_tooltip player_id="102308" first="Marcel" last="Reed"] - DQB Montgomery Bell Academy - The sophomore had 8 points (3-8 shooting, 0-4 from 3, 2-2 from the line), 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 1 steal in 22 minutes as a starter in the semifinal win over Knoxville Catholic. He followed that performance with 8 points (3-12 shooting, 2-7 from 3, 0-1 from the line), 2 rebounds, 5 assists, and 1 steal as a starter in 29 minutes of the championship win over Brentwood Academy. Reed has 6 FBS offers, with 4 from the SEC. At 6’1" 170 lbs, Marcel had 15 passing TDs and 7 rushing TDs this past season. With a big arm and very quick feet, this two-sport star has a bright future ahead of him.
[player_tooltip player_id="101863" first="Eli" last="Sutton"] - OT Brentwood Academy - The North Carolina signee had 6 points (3-4 shooting) and 1 rebound off the bench in 8 minutes of play of the semifinal win over Christian Brothers. He followed that up with 12 points (4-6 shooting, 4-4 from the line), 3 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 block in 12 minutes off the bench in the championship loss to Montgomery Bell Academy. At 6’7" 285 lbs, Eli is an athletic prospect - using his physical football nature on the hardwood and his agile basketball feet on the field. This future Tar Heel is going to be a big part of Mack Brown’s offense in Chapel Hill.
[player_tooltip player_id="101945" first="Caleb" last="Brooks"] - ATH Brentwood Academy - The senior starter had 11 points (5-8 shooting, 1-2 from 3), 5 rebounds and 2 assists in 22 minutes of play in the semifinal win over Christian Brothers. He followed that up with 0 points (0-3 shooting), 1 rebound and 1 block in 20 minutes of play in the championship loss to Montgomery Bell Academy. At 6’3" 186 lbs, Caleb is a physical safety and dynamic receiver - roaming in the secondary and running past defenders. He is unsigned at the moment, but whoever he ends up playing for will be getting a solid athlete.
