Zy Ford Zy Ford 6'0" | 205 lbs | LB East Webster | 2022 State MS | LB
Coming into the offseason Ford was thought of by our staff as one of the top sleeper prospects in the state. Since that time Ford has seen his recruitment blow up. Group of 5 offers from Southern Miss, La Tech and Memphis highlight an offer sheet of 13 schools as of today. As camp season rolls on and senior year nears expect to see that offer list only grow. As staffs lay their eyes on Ford and check his size I wouldn’t be surprised to see some Power 5 schools enter the mix. With nearly 100 tackles last year with 16 of those being for loss, expect Ford to be the leader for a stout defense in Webster County.
Jontavis Cunningham Jontavis Cunningham 5'11" | 180 lbs | ATH East Webster | 2022 State MS | ATH
The biggest question that surrounds Cunningham regards which side of the ball he belongs on at the next level. He produced last year as a WR with nearly 600 yards and 7TD in an offense that didn’t love to throw the football. His twitch off of the ball, blow by you speed and ability to cut crisply makes him an attractive slot receiver candidate. Cunningham toys with DB’s with his speed, baiting them into thinking they can run with him until he turns on the jets and blows past. While raw as a route runner, there is obvious potential to be dynamic in that area. From a physical standpoint Cunningham looks like a true safety, although he has not spent as much time there. With coaching he could find a great home on that side of the ball as his athletic intangibles transfer well over to that side. Juco offers are pouring in, but I’d be shocked not to see bigger offers in the future.
Kobe Smith Kobe Smith 5'11" | 175 lbs | LB East Webster | 2022 State MS | LB
Smith is the least known of the 3 guys mentioned here in recruiting circles due to his lack of size but don’t let that fool you, this kid can go. Smith has seen a ton of playing time at the LB position during his career at EW and it shows on tape. Smith shows a knack for getting to the football and is a sure-fire tackler when he gets there. Easy, loose athleticism is apparent in how he moves and changes direction. Shows the ability to go and make plays, doesn’t sit back and wait. Production in pass coverage as well as run stopping ability. Someone will take a chance on this kid and be glad that they did.
Big things are coming in the next year for East Webster as they will have great senior leadership from Ford, Cunningham and Smith.
