West Point football embodies one of the greatest cultures in Mississippi high school athletics. That starts at the top with Head Coach Chris Chambless and works it’s way down with leaders like Keon Cunningham Keon Cunningham 6'0" | 200 lbs | LB West Point | 2022 State MS on the defensive side and Cameron Young Cameron Young 5'11" | 190 lbs | RB West Point | 2022 State MS on the offensive end. The standard of what it means to be a football player for the Green Wave has been set years in advance and these guys believe it is their job to live up to that. This is truly a group of brothers on the field, a group that even has had their defensive unit take on the motto of “11 brothers.”
Hard-nosed, physical football is the style for Coach Chambless’ bunch on both sides of the ball and that has long been the case. According to Cunningham the team still has plenty of room for growth, but they most definitely have plans to avenge the 2020 5A state title game loss.
Moving forward Cunningham, a senior linebacker, believes the spring/summer periods will be pivotal to the growth and development of the team going as far as to say “the spring/summer is where West Point football is made”. The work nobody sees being put in is known to be a key ingredient and that is the type of work that these athletes are not afraid to put in.
2021 appears that it will showcase a great mixture of veterans and youth with good depth across the board again for the Green Wave. As the spring comes and summer follows right behind, expect to hear names from West Point being mentioned in recruiting circles as camps and workouts take place around the state. The spring football period is quickly sneaking up on everyone and the 5A powerhouse that is West Point will be one of the most fun teams in the state to keep an eye on. Everyone that follows high school football in Mississippi knows about West Point and I wouldn’t be expecting that to change any time soon.
