From Sumter to the west side of Lexington County, the central pocket of the state produces battle-tested players who are cutting their teeth just about every game. In six parts, we broke down all of them and what we loved about their games.
This is a list you don’t want to miss.
DAVIN “DJ” JACKSON
School: Sumter
Position: Defensive line
Analysis: Jackson’s stat pack is one that heeds double checking. That’s what happens when you have 26 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks and four QB hurries in a nine-game season.
DeQuandre Smith DeQuandre Smith 6'2" | 210 lbs | QB Spring Valley | 2022 State SCSchool: Spring Valley
Position: Quarterback
Analysis: The 6-foot-2, 210-pounder put up more than 1,700 yards of offense in his abbreviate junior season, and he’s got FCS offers at both quarterback and defensive back.
Zayveon Wells Zayveon Wells 5'10" | 170 lbs | DB Lakewood | 2022 State SCSchool: Lakewood
Position: Defensive back
Analysis: Wells is the second-best defensive back in the state, and it’s important to note that he’s so highly regarded despite having fewer opportunities due to a limited game action.
Cam Scott Cam Scott 5'11" | 175 lbs | WR Hammond School | 2022 State SCSchool: Hammond School
Position: Wide receiver
Analysis: Scott is a speedster who can torch opponents deep. But what makes him special is the 5-foot-11, 172-pound receiver goes across the middle and creates space amid havoc.
Rondarius Porter Rondarius Porter 6'2" | 260 lbs | DL Heathwood Hall | 2022 State SCSchool: Heathwood Hall
Position: Defensive line
Analysis: Porter accepted a preferred walk-on spot at nearby South Carolina, pulling the trigger on what would have been a hectic recruiting schedule for the talented tackle and end.
