Love duel-sport athletes? Yeah, me too. Something I’ve always been observant of are the accomplished athletes from Minnesota that are standouts on both the football field as well as the wrestling mat, basketball court, and hockey ice. As I’m sure many of you are well aware of, the state of Minnesota is FINALLY on the up-and-up in terms of national accreditation as a basketball hotbed thanks to the accomplishments of Matthew Hurt, [player_tooltip player_id="7244" first="Jalen" last="Suggs"], Chet Holmgren, Paige Bueckers, and many more studs. We in the Land of 10,000 Lakes have known for a while that there is a lot of noteworthy talent on the hardwood, and for a long time a lot of Minnesota’s best basketball players have succeeded in the Fall on the gridiron. The class of 2022 in Minnesota is particularly and especially loaded with talented football and basketball players, so I thought it would be interesting to make our readers aware of some of the top ranked Minnesotans in our affiliate PrepHoops 2022 rankings that are also standout football players. What I ended up with is 31 absolute STUDS on both the gridiron and the hardcourt, and I listed those preps below included with their PrepHoops ranking and any pertinent information or stats on the athlete. Thanks for reading, I hope you enjoy!
PrepHoopsMN Rank: 2. [player_tooltip player_id="49822" first="Trejuan" last="Holloman"] (Cretin Derham Hall) DB. 6’3. @Tretrehoops - In 2020 totaled 52 tackles, 4 TFLs, 4 PBUs, 15 catches for 208 yards and 4 TDs, 15 carries and 181 yards and 1 TD and even passed 7-14 for 100 yards and 2 TDs. Holds football offers from N ofebraska, Michigan State, Minnesota, Iowa, Iowa State. Far past double-digits in basketball offers. There's always a knock on basketball players that they aren't physical enough to play football but Holloman far and above destroys that stigma. The kid can hit, not to mention he's one of the best duel-sport athletes in the country in the class of 2022.
PrepHoopsMN Rank: 5. [player_tooltip player_id="18422" first="Eli" last="King"] (Caledonia) WR. 6’3. Our #1 recruit for the 2022 class for PrepRedzone. Holds football offers from Minnesota, Iowa, Iowa State, Nebraska, Nebraska, Missouri, Stanford, Notre Dame, and more. Phenomenal and freakish athlete coming from the best prep football program in Caledonia who can do anything and everything on the gridiron or hardwood and is going to make whatever college program he chooses very happy.
PrepHoopsMN Rank: 10. [player_tooltip player_id="18423" first="Chase" last="Carter"] (SMB) DE. 6’6. Grabbed football offers from Iowa, Michigan State this fall. Totaled 31 tackles, 14 TFLs, and 8 sacks in 5 games in 2020. Really intriguing skill-set for a pass-rusher and is an explosive athlete on the gridiron and hardwood. I am really pumped to see him at the upcoming PrepRedzoneMN Showcase on January 18th.
PrepHoopsMN Rank: 11. [player_tooltip player_id="18443" first="Nick" last="Katona"] (Shakopee) WR. 6’6. In my estimation Katona is more focused on basketball, but his sophomore highlights from 2019 show off a long-striding and athletic wideout who can take the top off of a defense.
PrepHoopsMN Rank: 13. Alonzo Dodd (South St. Paul) WR/DB. 6’3. Also a physical presence on the gridiron for a hooper, Dodd is versatile and explosive and on the hardwood is shifty with some nice handles and a smooth shot.
PrepHoopsMN Rank: 22. [player_tooltip player_id="49819" first="Teigan" last="Martin"] (Mayer Lutheran) TE. 6’8. Offered by Iowa State. Big-time ceiling and potential in both sports and could be a huge asset for a football team if he could put on some weight. Huge catch radius and soft hands coupled with some quick feet + a scary redzone threat. I am really pumped to see him at the upcoming PrepRedzoneMN Showcase on January 18th.
PrepHoopsMN Rank: 23. [player_tooltip player_id="18427" first="Emmett" last="Johnson"] (Holy Angels) ATH. 5’11. Holds football offers from Eastern Michigan, Central Michigan, Northern Iowa. Had a monster junior season in 2020 that included multiple All-Metro nods, District MVP, and a ton of broken tackles/big hits. Johnson really showed off the fact that he can potentially play on either side of the ball in college and was a force to be reckoned with on defense this season. He's seriously explosive and dangerous with the ball in his hands. Instinctual and natural football player as well.
PrepHoopsMN Rank: 37. [player_tooltip player_id="18444" first="Thomas" last="Diew"] (St. Cloud Apollo) DE. 6’7. Long and lean who can use his hands on defense as a pass-rusher or on offense as a TE. Big upside.
PrepHoopsMN Rank: 42. [player_tooltip player_id="18425" first="Mekhi" last="Collins"] (Mankato West) WR/DB. 6’5. Love the fact that Collins can and does play offense and defense for West, and I especially love seeing him at the CB position at 6'5. He fires out of his breaks and is a lockdown CB who can make a play on any ball thrown his way. I am really pumped to see him at the upcoming PrepRedzoneMN Showcase on January 18th.
PrepHoopsMN Rank: 44. [player_tooltip player_id="18438" first="Sam" last="Rensch"] (Hutchinson) WR/DB. 6’6. Already has a ton of experience in both sports for powerhouse Hutchinson and uses his height and vertical ability to his advantage as a WR or FS. Also has no problem using his pads and throwing his body around if he needs to. I am really pumped to see him at the upcoming PrepRedzoneMN Showcase on January 18th.
PrepHoopsMN Rank: 45. [player_tooltip player_id="49836" first="Justin" last="Wohlers"] (Lake City) WR. 6’5. Small-school prospect with big-time potential. I'm very excited to see his skill-set and game in-person at our upcoming PrepRedzoneMN Showcase. There's a lot to like about his athleticism in both sports.
PrepHoopsMN Rank: 54. James Spencer (Osseo) DE, 6’5. Lots of potential as a pass-rusher on the gridiron.
PrepHoopsMN Rank: 55. [player_tooltip player_id="49821" first="Spencer" last="Alvarez"] (Columbia Heights) TE/DE. 6’6. Absolutely love his frame, physicality, and potential as a football player and also balls on the prestigious Howard Pulley AAU squad. I hope the fact that he plays football at Columbia Heights doesn't hurt him because his sophomore film from 2019 was legit and fun to watch.
PrepHoopsMN Rank: 63. [player_tooltip player_id="22924" first="Kristen" last="Hoskins"] (Alexandria) WR. 5’10. Offered by South Dakota and Iowa State. Threat to score every single time he touches the football. Elite speed and a fantastic athlete with the football in his hands.
PrepHoopsMN Rank: 69. [player_tooltip player_id="18442" first="Drew" last="Berkland"] (Wayzata) DB. 5’11. Committed to play baseball for the Minnesota Gophers. Absolutely outstanding athlete who is one of the best players in his class in all three sports his plays. As a DB on the football field he's instinctual and aggressive and made plays in the run and pass game.
PrepHoopsMN Rank: 71. [player_tooltip player_id="18426" first="Haydn" last="Stay"] (Princeton) ATH. 6’4. I'm still a little surprised that Stay hasn't received an offer yet, as he's incredibly versatile and dynamic and has some rare size and athleticism for his age. Really impressive physical specimen.
PrepHoopsMN Rank: 80. [player_tooltip player_id="18449" first="De’Meiko" last="Anderson"] (MPLS North) WR. 5’11. Finally started getting some D1 recruiting graphics from St. Thomas and also has garnered some interest from Bemidji State and Augustana. Explosive WR who is a huge vertical threat in-terms of both a deep threat and a redzone target.
PrepHoopsMN Rank: 81. [player_tooltip player_id="18424" first="Mario" last="Sanders"] (MPLS North) WR. 6’1. Offered by Northern Iowa. Had a monster 2020 season and put up crazy numbers in the limited amount of games from 2020. Shifty, sure-handed, and a natural wideout who can beat DBs in short, intermediate, or deep routes.
PrepHoopsMN Rank: 87. [player_tooltip player_id="18435" first="Nick" last="Ojile"] (Spring Lake Park) DE. 6’4. Holds a UMD offer. Great frame and athleticism for a DE. All the tools and genetics are there to be a productive collegiate DE.
PrepHoopsMN Rank: 89. [player_tooltip player_id="49893" first="Evan" last="Bearth"] (Park of Cottage Grove) QB. 6’3. Just took over the reins at QB for Park and is a real duel-threat at the QB position who can beat you with his arm or his legs. Smooth athlete.
PrepHoopsMN Rank: 90. Mitchell January (Richfield) WR. 6’. Coming off a heckuva 2020 season that saw him earn All-Metro Second Team honors. Lot of good football left from January and a lot of college coaches who need to check him out.
PrepHoopsMN Rank: 96. [player_tooltip player_id="27459" first="Ryan" last="Harvey"] (Wayzata) QB. 6’3. Just took over as the QB for Wayzata and is a great athlete who is mobile with some impressive physical tools.
PrepHoopsMN Rank: 101. [player_tooltip player_id="18429" first="Logan" last="Larson"] (East Ridge) DE. 6’3. Thunderous, strong, and experienced big-school DE prospect out of East Ridge who is very much overlooked by college coaches at this point. He's got great technique, hands, and effort and is a disruptive defensive lineman who makes a big impact and needs to be accounted for in the run and pass game.
PrepHoopsMN Rank: 109. [player_tooltip player_id="49882" first="Alec" last="Turnbull"] (Cloquet) QB. 6’3. Small-school prospect with a lot of athleticism and experience.

PrepHoopsMN Rank: 121. [player_tooltip player_id="49939" first="RJ" last="Spencer"] (Totino-Grace) ATH. 6’3
PrepHoopsMN Rank: 131. [player_tooltip player_id="49841" first="TJ" last="Chiabotti"] (North Woods) RB/DB. 5’10. Had a monster 2020 season that saw him earn DuluthNews All-Area First Team Defense and Conference Offensive MVP. So far in his career he has totaled 3,261 yards, 42 TDs, and 15 TDs. That's some serious production.
PrepHoopsMN Rank: 136. [player_tooltip player_id="18421" first="Rashad" last="McKinley"] (Hill Murray) WR. 6’. Has seen his recruitment cool off a little since the 2020 season but is still a special wideout who gets out of his cuts with a ton of force and is a handful in the open field for opposing defenders. Really big potential sleeper of a WR prospect.
PrepHoopsMN Rank: 143. Zach Jorgensen (Fairmont) ATH. 6’2
PrepHoopsMN Rank: 157. Charlie Plum (Cretin-Derham Hall) TE. 6’4
