A player put as an ’Athlete’ in football is a player who has played many positions at the varsity level and has done well in each position. Check them out below!
Tyce Ortman Tyce Ortman 5'10" | 185 lbs | ATH Canistota-Freeman | 2021 State – Canistota-Freeman
Ortman led another strong CF Pride football team to a third straight 9A State Title. He played QB and DB as a senior, but in his previous years, he was a RB. He was a running QB mostly, but could make important throws when needed, ran the read option offense really well. Defensively, he was really good in pass coverage and tackled really well. He has offers from NAIA schools (Northwestern IA, Dakota Wesleyan, Dakota State, & Morningside).
Kale Stevenson Kale Stevenson 5'9" | 180 lbs | ATH Watertown | 2021 State – Watertown
Stevenson was the QB and played DB at times as a senior. He made the move from RB and a Stong Safety type as a junior. Also a great runner who was shifty and elusive, but wasn’t afraid of contact breaking through many tackles. As a passer, I thought he did well being put into the position as a senior in the biggest class in SD. Having a WR like Dawson Schmidt Dawson Schmidt 6'4" | 190 lbs | WR Watertown | 2021 State made it a lot easier too, literally throw it anywhere close to him and he’s coming down with it. He did a great job extending plays with his legs and making positive gains out of near disaster. Will definitely be a RB or DB at the college level, currently has NAIA interest, but no offers.
Chayce Montagne Chayce Montagne 5'8" | 180 lbs | ATH Dakota Valley | 2021 State – Dakota Valley
Montagne was a QB ran a unique style offense, definitely a run-heavy formation but involved a lot of misdirection. He sold his fakes pretty well, by the time the defense knew where the ball was, it was too late. He’s got a pretty good jolt of speed, gets north and south pretty quick, and has good vision. He did not throw much, but can throw a decent ball. Defensively, he played DB, he was good at reading the QB at Safety and ball-hawking. He also played a corner, pretty good pass coverage in the man-to-man, also snuck up on some CB blitzes. He is good at flying around and getting to the ball and starting a gang tackle. Has offers from NAIA and a D2 school.
Carter Hoffman Carter Hoffman 5'5" | 175 lbs | ATH Deuel | 2021 State – Deuel
Hoffman was kind of a utility guy with teammate Layton Eide Layton Eide 5'11" | 190 lbs | DB Deuel | 2021 State , both players seemed to be put wherever needed each week. Hoffman was mostly a RB, took some snaps at wildcat QB, and split out wide some plays. Defensively, he was a CB and OLB, not many highlights, but is a form tackler and makes sure he stops the ball-carrier. He also had many kick returns for either big yards, or TD’s. He’s a very physical football player, running the ball with almost intent to hit the defender, he usually busts big plays in doing so. Once he breaks through the line of scrimmage, he really hits the jets and finds the end zone.
Jaxton Schiller Jaxton Schiller 6'2" | 195 lbs | ATH Sioux Valley | 2021 State – Sioux Valley
Schiller was a RB/WR/Wing back in the Cossack offense, he thrived in a small-ball type offense. He made a lot of big plays coming out of the backfield, taking handoffs or catching screens. He has good vision and speed, breaks through most arm tackles and is also a dangerous vertical threat. Defensively, he was a DB and he read the offensive keys well, played well in the man-to-man and loved to deliver the big hit.
Isaac Sumption Isaac Sumption ATH North Border | 2021 State – North Border
Sumption caught fire this year making the MidCo player of the week list many times this season, after finally watching his film it was easy to see why. He was listed at QB but mostly was a running QB with sweeps and power plays, he made some good throws as well when they decided to pass, also took some snaps at WR when they did some trick plays. He is very shifty, fast and has excellent vision. He does not go down easy, he spins, makes cuts, and lets his blocks develop before making the big run. Defensively at Safety he is a good ball-hawk in passing situations, and he can go up and get the football.
Riley Schmitz Riley Schmitz 6'0" | 165 lbs | RB Elk Point-Jefferson | 2021 State – Elk Point-Jefferson
Schmitz was a good focal point for the EPJ offense, in the scheme he was touching the ball almost every play at RB. He was an iron horse, pretty much cause the defense had a hard time catching up to him most games. Once he got up to speed he had a big play and usually had a TD, he has good vision, patience and acceleration. Defensively he was a LB and is a good form tackler, reads his keys well and times the snap on blitzes.
