The Redbugs was a loaded football team this season on both sides of the ball and winning the state championship did not come as a shock to many observers. However, it is still an impressive accomplishment. Winning a state championship in the state of Arkansas is never an easy proposition.
The Redbugs were not really tested until the state championship game against Des Arc and what a game it would turn out to be. Fordyce was able to get the two senior running backs Ja’Quez Cross Ja’Quez Cross 5'10" | 170 lbs | ATH Fordyce | 2021 State AR and Gary Lewis Gary Lewis 6'2" | 215 lbs | LB Fordyce | 2021 State AR going against Des Arc last Saturday. The Purdue commit Cross rushed 228 yards against Des Arc and forced the Eagles to have to work from behind. Meanwhile, Lewis rushed for two touchdowns and 108 yards. Fordyce has run the ball all season effectively and the state championship game was no different.
Des Arc rallied in the second half after being down 21-12 but just ran out of time. Eyan Holloway kept the Eagles in the game and cut the lead to 28-20 in the third quarter. Des Arc would finally cut the score to 35-32 but would just run out of time against the Red Bugs. Des Arc and Fordyce played a classic and it was the best game of the state championships this season. Credit must be given to the schools, players, and coaches in not allowing Covid-19 to derail the season and finish the season at War Memorial Stadium. Congratulations go out to the Fordyce Redbugs on winning another state championship.
