Smith, the No. 123 overall prospect in California’s class of 2021 according to Prep Redzone, previously committed to San Diego State on May 19, but decommitted on September 22.
Since then, Smith has gotten offers from Lehigh, Jackson State and Morgan State.
He played the last two seasons at Madison High (San Diego) before transferring to Lincoln, one of the top football programs in the San Diego Section. Smith rushed for 292 yards and three touchdowns, averaging nearly nine yards and a carry and caught 32 balls for 519 yards and six more scores as a junior last season.
Most schools are recruiting Smith as a defensive back. He had two interceptions for Madison last season.
Smith told Greg Biggins of 247Sports that Jackson State is standing out as his top choice at the moment.
“That was amazing,” Smith said. “Talking to Deion Sanders and getting an offer from him was incredible and something I wasn’t expecting. I know they’re not recruiting that many kids out this way so to have a legend like him call and offer means a lot,” Smith told Biggins. “Right now, I would say they’re my leader. I’ve had some family that have gone to school there and playing at a HBCU would be pretty special.”
“A big part of my decision is finding a school where I can grow not just as a player but a person as well and I think playing at Jackson State would definitely help me become a better man and leader.”
Extremely blessed to say that I have received a full ride scholarship offer to Jackson State University🙏🏽 #XW3LP @DHill39 @DeionSanders @jacksonstatefb @JsonCarter @TheHiveFootball @BrandonHuffman @RyanWrightRNG @Herman30536538 @DameshaHoliday @akili_smith @CoachDC8 pic.twitter.com/JenOvPhi8V
