Let’s take a look at the players who stood out Thursday night.
Charles Abplanalp, Bloomfield: Bloomfield won its first game of the season on Thursday, coming back from 20 points down in the fourth quarter to edge Passaic Tech. Abplanalp, the team’s junior quarterback, scored on a 10-yard run and found senior wide receiver Xavier Antigua for two long touchdown passes.
Weber Karsay, Montgomery: Karsay rushed for 105 yards on 11 carries with a 71-yard TD run as Montgomery defeated North Hunterdon. Karsay also had a sack and made an interception on defense. Quarterback Alex Benitez Alex Benitez 5'8" | QB Montgomery | 2022 NJ ran for a score and threw a touchdown to Dylan McFadden, who made three receptions for 82 yards. Mark Jenkins had an interception for Montgomery as well.
Steve Burkhart, Gloucester: Burkhart ran for a pair of TD runs as Gloucester improved to 3-0 following Thursday’s 20-7 win over Maple Shade. He scored on runs of 24 and 28 yards.
Juan Donoso, Memorial: Memorial is 3-0 for the first time in nine years. The team had to overcome a number of turnovers but ultimately rallied for 14-13 thrilling victory over Cliffside Park. Donoso, the team’s quarterback, threw a touchdown and ran for one in the win. He finished with 85 rushing yards on 21 carries, scoring on a 23-yard run. He found Ethan Garcia for a 67-yard TD in the fourth quarter. Andrik Breton had an interception for Memorial.
Jeremiah Turner, Cliffside Park: Turner had two interceptions for Cliffside Park in its one-point loss to Memorial on Thursday.
Lukkas Londono, Cliffside Park: Londono rushed for 112 yards on 27 carries and found the end zone on a 47-yard run that gave Cliffside Park a 7-0 lead in the second quarter.
Nakia Johnson, Newark Central: Johnson ran for 194 yards on 26 carries with TD runs of 2, 8 and 12 yards as Newark Central fell to Snyder, 32-30.
