The 2020 season is in full swing across the state of Oklahoma. And while the season gets going, recruiting is as important as ever. As of right now, Oklahoma’s 2021 class has 31 prospects currently committed. This week, we saw a commitment change as Wagoner DE Isaac Smith Isaac Smith 6'5" | DL Wagoner | 2021 State OK switched his commitment from Tulsa to Texas Tech. The 2021 class appears to be deep, especially on the defensive side of the ball. Every Wednesday, we’ll spotlight five prospects that are still deciding their college futures.

– Linebacker – Metro Christian
Metro Christian had an undefeated run to a state championship in 2019. While most of the headlines were around quarterback Asher Link, the Patriots wouldn’t have been able to make that run without the emergence of linebacker

. After a breakout junior season, Gibson has taken his game to another level this fall. Gibson is an interesting prospect because his personality and game on the field are very far apart. His game is loud and disruptive and full of speed and power. However, off the field, Gibson is quiet and reserved. Under the Friday night lights, Gibson lets out all of his frustrations on opposing teams. Gibson’s number one trait is his speed and closely behind that is his ability to read an offense and be in the right place at the right time. The linebacker position is pretty deep this year but Gibson is a name to circle.

– Cornerback – Broken Arrow
Broken Arrow knew that they would be strong on the defensive side of the ball at the linebacker position. But they had to replace some key pieces in the secondary. One of the breakout players for Broken Arrow this fall has been senior corner

. From the opening game of the season, Williams showed that he had the skills to be one of the better cover corners in the state. Not only has he been a breakout player for the Tigers, but he’s been a breakout prospect in this 2021 class. We didn’t know much about Williams before the season but he’s flown up the rankings when it comes to the cornerback position. Williams is a physical corner who has caused several turnovers this season. When he gets his opportunities to make plays, more times than not, he makes them. Williams is comfortable playing up on the line or backing off and closing on the play late.

Similar to Williams at Broken Arrow, Putnam City North has enjoyed the breakout season from wide receiver

. This is an interesting story as for the last several years, Nwankwo had his mind on basketball and was considered one of the better basketball prospects in this 2021 class. However, he decided to put on the helmet and pads and join the football team and has had an immediate impact. The reason he’s become one of the state’s better prospects in such a short window is the physical traits. He’s 6’6 and can jump over everyone. He isn’t just a stiff out on the football field either. He runs really well and he isn’t just a deep threat, he can go over the middle and make a catch in traffic. Nwankwo is one of several former basketball standouts in this 2021 class that might end up having a brighter future on the football field. Only time will tell on that.

– Offensive Lineman – Woodward
If you’re a prospect from Woodward or really anywhere out in western Oklahoma, you have to do what you can to get noticed, being far away from the two metro areas in the state. However, with offensive lineman

, it’s hard to overlook the 6’6 big man who absolutely demolishes the opponents that he faces. Now, at the time that we write this, Lanham has had a setback as he’s tested positive for Covid and has to miss Woodward’s week eight and nine games. However, throw on the tape below and look at what he’s already done this season. Lanham is certainly a prospect that has had his stock go significantly up this season. He’s a prospect that we didn’t know much about back in August but once we learned about him and watched what he could do, that was all she wrote. Lanham is a tackle prospect that has been on the rise all fall.

One of the more underrated athletes in the state is Bristow’s

. A lot of that comes from the offense that he runs at Bristow. He quarterbacks the flexbone offense of the Pirates and has done a phenomenal job doing so. However, we don’t see too many colleges running the flexbone at the next level. But that doesn’t matter when you watch Tolon on tape because he is an outstanding athlete running the football. It wouldn’t surprise us at all if he made a smooth transition to running back at the next level. But that isn’t all. Tolon is also a standout on the defensive side of the ball. And defense might end up being Tolon’s natural fit when it comes to being a college prospect. While Tolon plays safety for the Pirates on defense, he could end up moving forward to more of a hybrid or linebacker role. Wherever you plug him in, he’s proven he can make plays.
