Today we take a look at Camden’s senior group.
Camden is coming off a 12-2 record in 2019 and has a deep class of players to watch.
Offensively, Camden has a potent attack led by two Division I prospects in the backfield.
The first is quarterback Jaffari Pearson Jaffari Pearson 6'2" | 205 lbs | QB Camden | 2021 State SC (6’2, 205), a dual-threat passer, who threw for 1,830 yards and 20 touchdowns, with just 11 interceptions, in 2019. Pearson ran for 634 yards and 13 touchdowns as well. He currently does not have any D1 offers but should get some FCS and D2 looks. If Pearson can improve his TD:INT ratio then he should rise up the board. We currently have him as the #11 quarterback and #132 overall in the state.
His best weapon coming back is Class AAA First-Team All-State running back Willis Lane Jr. Willis Lane Jr. 5'9" | 180 lbs | RB Camden | 2021 State SC (5’9, 180) who rushed for 2,389 yards and 12 touchdowns (9.9ypc) in 2019. He also was a factor in the backfield with 143 yards and four touchdowns. Lane had a dynamic junior campaign and is currently #64 overall and the #6 running back in South Carolina. His lack of D1 offers is surprising as Lane is a player that should at least have a dozen FCS/G5 type offers.
They also have some talent on the offensive line with both Donovan Edwards (6’4, 285) and Drake Davis Drake Davis 6'3" | 310 lbs | OL Camden | 2021 State SC (6’3, 310).
Davis, a center, has D1 size and power but is limited athletically so he would not fit in a scheme that requires him to pull a lot. He also needs to improve his pad level and technique but has the physical tools to work with and would be a good FCS or D2 signing.
The other player on their line is right tackle Donovan Edwards who plays right tackle. He has the body to fit at guard at the D1 level or be a very good tackle in the G5 or below. Edwards needs to improve technique and become a better finisher but he has some natural tools. Expect him to land in the FCS or D2 level. He is ranked #153 overall and #20 offensive lineman in the state.
The defense is led by two solid prospects at linebacker and in the secondary.
The top rated player on defense is defensive back Joseph Byrnes Joseph Byrnes 6'0" | 180 lbs | DB Camden | 2021 State SC (6’0, 181) who finished second on the team with 108 tackles, two tackles for loss, two interceptions, 10 passes defended, two fumble recoveries, and one forced fumble in 14 games last year. He is our #7 defensive back and #42 overall in the state. Byrnes has an offer from Davidson but that list should grow as we get closer to signing day.
Last on the list is linebacker Marcellus Juggins Marcellus Juggins 6'0" | 190 lbs | LB Camden | 2021 State SC (6’0, 190) who could potentially be a defensive back in college. He was third on the team with 101 tackles along with two tackles for loss, four sacks, two interceptions, two fumble recoveries, and one forced fumble in 14 games last season. Juggins does not have any current offers but is another name to watch and should land some D2 and FCS interest.
Next on our list is Sumter’s class.
