Teams need players that can cover big wide receivers and read mobile and big-armed quarterbacks. Here are five defensive backs to watch for, for the rest of the season.
1. Emon Allen Emon Allen 5'9" | 170 lbs | DB Vista Ridge | 2021 TX – Vista Ridge High School (Cedar Park, TX)
Allen has received District 13-6A First-Team honors as well as Utility Player of the Year. Allen committed to Robert Morris back in August but has also received an offer from Eastern Michigan. So far this season, Allen has racked up 13 total tackles and four pass deflections. In his junior season, he had five interceptions for 80 yards including six pass deflections and 45 total tackles. He also had three interceptions in his sophomore season. There are still four games left in the season and Allen is a name to watch out for those four more games as Vista Ridge continues to look to dominate District 25.
2. Donovan Dreighton Donovan Dreighton 6'2" | 200 lbs | DB Brennan | 2021 TX – Brennan High School (San Antonio, TX)
A three-star safety out of San Antonio, Dreighton has committed to Louisiana-Monroe but also received offers from Abilene Christian, Air Force, Army, Houston Baptist, Navy, New Mexico and Sam Houston State. Dreighton is one the watchlist in the Prep Redzone Texas Class of 2021 Rankings. In his junior season, he totaled 63 tackles including two sacks and two interceptions with a fumble recovery. Brennan has just started its season over in San Antonio, which gives Dreighton more of an opportunity to show his worth before he transitions to Division I football.
3. Jalen Rainey Jalen Rainey 6'3" | 190 lbs | DB Brandeis | 2021 TX – Brandeis High School (San Antonio, TX)
Another three-star safety out of San Antonio is Rainey who committed to UTSA back in August. He received offers from Air Force, Arkansas State, Army, Incarnate Word, Lamar, Louisiana Tech, Navy, New Mexico, Sam Houston State, Tulane, UNLV and Yale as well. He is a two-sport athlete who does track as well. Keep a look out for Rainey as Brandeis is also just starting its season.
4. Andrew Mukuba Andrew Mukuba 6'0" | 195 lbs | DB LBJ | 2021 State TX – LBJ High School (Austin, TX)
The four-star safety out of Austin has just recently committed to Clemson. In his junior season, Mukuba had two interceptions and 25 total tackles. He was given District 12-5A Offensive Newcomer of the Year honors when he was a junior and received unanimous first-team all-district selection at the safety position. Although not defensive statistics, he also had 807 receiving yards and 15 touchdowns in 36 receptions his junior season to boot.
5. Cruz Untz – Steele High School (Cibolo, TX)
