An OK Conference On The Line In East Kentwood
By Sam Lass
Overview:
Today I took a trip to East Kenwood Stadium, to check out the matchup between South Christian and catholic Central that will determine the ok gold conference champion. Both teams had a lot of talent coming into this game and a lot of prospects were on notice today. Catholic Central is known for being a football powerhouse in West Michigan for recent years and this years team is no different. The Sailors, weren’t too many’s pick to win this conference but they showed that they belong. Midway through the first quarter, Elliot Grashuis Elliot Grashuis 6'4" | Wide Receiver Grand Rapids South Christian | 2021 MI had a tremendous over the top catch for 40 yards to put the Sailors up 6-0 in this highly anticipated matchup. Then lightning struck again twice for the Sailors, The work horse running back that has been Trevor Hanson for the sailors put them up 14-0 with a 59 yards scamper. And that would prove to be the end of scoring in the first half for either teams. It was a bit of a shocker for myself to see the Grand Rapids catholic central cougars health score of this in the first half with all the talent they have to offer. The second half started off With the Cougar is running the ball and giving the ball to the running back number 23 senior running back Nate Hollern to make the score interesting and competitive scoring a touchdown for the cougars with 8:12 left in the third quarter. Then disaster struck for the sailors as their part was worked on the next possession side in the cougars up on the sailors 32 yard line with 5:12 left in the third with an opportunity to tie up the ballgame. And tie it up they did with their excellent running quarterback Joey Silveri Joey Silveri 6'1" | 200 lbs | QB Grand Rapids Catholic Central | 2022 MI making the score 14-14 with 4 minutes left in the third. The fourth-quarter began with the sailors answering the two touchdowns the Cougar scored in scoring a touchdown of their own to take the lead 21 to 14 to start the fourth quarter with 11 minutes in the game . But with 6 minutes left in the game Silveri would find his way into the end zone again to tie the score 21-21 and send the game to overtime. The start of the first overtime would end up with the workhouse Hansen punching it in for the sailors to make it 27-21 then Catholic Central would fire back and score another touchdown to make it 27-28, in which Catholic would go for the extra point and he…got it, and the Cougars for not leading in regulation win against South Christian to claim the OK Gold Conference.
Key Players From Friday Night:
Joey Silveri Joey Silveri 6'1" | 200 lbs | QB Grand Rapids Catholic Central | 2022 MI QB • Jr. • 6’ 1″ • 200 lbs CC #6-
Silveri is the workhorse, the bell cow for the Cougars he controls the peace of the game in the pace of the offense for the cougars. Silveri has great size and a terrific arm in the ability to run the ball in deliver punishment to be in defender. There is no doubt in my mind that Silveri well have multiple college offers to play football. Any college program would welcome the special talent and learn to develop him. Silveri is also clutch and wants the ball, in which he scored the game winning touchdown in overtime to secure a win for the cougars. Silveri has promising potential at the next level.
Danny Krajeksi TE • Sr. • 6’ 3″ • 215 lbs CC #33-
Keajski has great length and size to punish whoever gets in his way when he catches the ball. But he is also known for his play making ability on defense, intercepting a pass midway through the first quarter.
John Passinault WR CB • Jr. • 6’ 0″ • 175 lbs CC #2-
Passinault Is a quick athletic tall target for Silveri and his go to receiver when he needs a big play. Has great length and size to deliver hits t cornerback, where he really shines.
Eli Smith WR SR 6’0” 150lbs SC #11-
Smith does it all for the sailors in the receiving game. Smith went off tonight against the cougars, having 7 receptions in the first half of this match up in catching a 59-yard touchdown to make the score 14 nothing with four minutes left in the second quarter. Smith is very quick and a Wes Walker type receive her as you might say, small but finds a knack to get open and find the ball. Smith is a Dark-horse prospect for me in the West Michigan area.
Elliott Grashuis Elliott Grashuis 6'4" | 165 lbs | WR South Christian | 2021 State MI WR • Sr. • 6’ 4″ • 165 lbs SC #10-
Grashuis Has tremendous length in size to go up and get the ball and that was proven in the first quarter grabbing a 40 yard touchdown out of the defenders hand and for sailors touchdown to grab the moment I’m six tonight then midway through the first quarter. Grashuis would make any college program proud with the way he works in the way he runs and makes plays for his team. I would certainly not pass up on this opportunity to grab a receiver with the size and height. His ability to go up to the ball and get it is unmatched.
Trevor Hansen CB, SB • Sr. • 5’ 9″ • 170 lbs SC #5-
Hansen is the work how senior running back for the sailors who is continuous on each drive of getting the ball. Hansen has tremendous speed and agility to breakthrough horse and get nifty through defences to gain extra yardage. Hansen Had a 59-yard touchdown run to the house midway through the first quarter to put the sailors up 14 nothing and take a commanding lead midway through the first quarter.
