Here is a scouting report and preview of the marquee matchups and standout performances from the first half of the 2020 season.
Class 3A
Southeast of Saline (4-0) at Colby (4-0)
The Trojans are undefeated and have to 300-yard rushers heading into Week 4. Jaxson Gebhardt Jaxson Gebhardt 6'0" | 175 lbs | QB SE Saline | 2021 State KS , ranked No. 119 in the Class of 2021 Prep Redzone Kansas player rankings leads the team with 316 yards on the ground and six rushing touchdowns. Fellow backfield mate Bryant Banks Bryant Banks 6'0" | 210 lbs | LB SE Saline | 2021 State KS has rushed for 311 yards and five touchdowns on the ground. Banks is currently ranked No. 157 in the same watch list.
Cherryvale (1-3) at Columbus (4-0)
Junior running back Gabe Martin has been posting impressive numbers for Columbus. Martin has amassed 461 yards rushing and scored five times on the ground. He also has 21 tackles for the Titans. Look for Martin to lead the Titans offense and possibly have a huge night against the 1-3 Cherryvale Defense.
Class 2A
Hoisington (4-0) at Minneapolis (2-2)
Quarterback Mason Haxton Mason Haxton 6'0" | 180 lbs | QB Hoisington | 2021 State KS has been successfully guiding the Hoisington offense to a 4-0 start. The Cardinals have scored 32 or more points in all of their games and are coming off a 42-21 win over Phillipsburg. Haxton has passed for 252 yards and rushed for 182 yards in four games. Haxton is ranked No. 113 in the Class of ’21 rankings. He is not posting eye-popping numbers, but he is a proven winner and could lead a junior college offense.
Mission Valley (3-1) at Silver Lake (2-0)
Justice Dunbar a senior running back leads the Mission Valley Vikings into Week Four with a surprising 3-1 record. Dunbar has rushed for 377 yards and five touchdowns. The senior at 5’10” and 170 pounds is athletic and plays like he’s been well-coached. He projects as a solid JUCO recruit.
Class 1A
Wabaunsee (2-2) at Valley Heights (4-0)
Cade Oliver is having a big season for the Wabaunsee Chargers. The junior quarterback is coming off a game in which he passed for 286 yards. Dereck Wallin leads Wabaunsee’s defense with 35 tackles. Both Charger seniors are looking for college offers and face a tough undefeated Week Five opponent in Valley Heights.
Central Heights (3-1) at Horton (0-4)
Central Heights will look to take a get its second win in Class 1A’s competitive District One. Junior quarterback Tony Detweiler is an athlete scouts should start zeroing in on. He has accounted for 11 touchdowns; eight through the air and three on the ground. The dual-threat QB has 500 yards rushing and 329 passing for a team that trails Olpe and Lyndon in District One.
