With that said, we are going to take a look at the top skill position players from as many districts as possible in the state before fall camps begin.
Some of these players are already receiving college interest, while others are looking to catch the eye of that right coach.
Tyler Johnson – Ankeny Centennial
Not much went right in the opener for Ankeny Centennial, but the Jaguars have a nice piece on offense to work with in Tyler Johnson.
Johnson is coming off a junior campaign that saw him rush for 694 yards with four touchdowns, averaging almost seven yards per carry. He also caught nine passes for 140 yards and two scores.
Max Tafolla – Iowa City Liberty
As they continue to get familiar with each other as a school, Iowa City Liberty is making big strides.
Max Tafolla returns after racking up 1,136 yards and eight scores a year ago. He averaged almost six yards per rush as the Lightning had over 2,600 yards rushing as a team.
Tafolla also recorded 21 tackles including six for loss on defense.
Keyshaun Brooks – Ames
Had this article been put together before Week 1, Keyshaun Brooks might not have been included.
Playing with all-world basketball standout Tamin Lipsey in the opener, Brooks caught 12 passes for 133 yards and two scores. Last year, he had just six receptions spanning 36 yards with a touchdown.

Brendan Bates Brendan Bates 6'1" | 210 lbs | QB Marshalltown | 2021 IA – Marshalltown
To have any success this year on the gridiron, Marshalltown will need plenty of production out of Brendan Bates Brendan Bates 6'1" | 210 lbs | QB Marshalltown | 2021 IA .
The Class of 2021 Bates completed 78 of 140 passes a year ago for 974 yards with 14 touchdowns. He added two more scores on the ground.
Bates had a tough start to the 2020 season, throwing for 123 yards.
Sean Head – Des Moines East
Sean Head did a little bit of everything on offense for Des Moines East last year.
Head completed 43 of 80 passes for 602 yards with six touchdowns as a quarterback. He also ran the ball 78 times for 294 yards with a score, while adding 12 receptions for 133 yards and two more touchdowns.
He also played a key role in special teams, averaging nine yards per kickoff return and five yards per punt return.
