Prospects in the Class of 2021 like Ralston Valley linebacker Will Lester Will Lester 5'11" | LB Ralston Valley | 2021 State CO , who has an offer from Missouri Western State, have seen their recruitment slowed by a coronavirus-related combination of dead periods, the postponement of Colorado’s football season to the spring and a lack of camps or other opportunities to show what they can do. Lester and many others were grateful for Friday’s event and a chance to get measured and add 40-yard dash, broad jump, shuttle and vertical leap numbers to their recruiting resumes.
“This is just making the best of what it is,” Lester said. “If we don’t have a season, you know, at least these people were out here and are nice enough to put this on for us to give us something. You just have to play with the cards you’re dealt and this should help us.”
Nearly 100 athletes showed up for Friday’s free event and many impressed. Check out all the highlights from the 40-yard dash, broad jump and shuttle. Here is a look at who ran the top vertical leaps, as well as a complete list of heights each player touched.
Will Lester Will Lester 5'11" | LB Ralston Valley | 2021 State CO , 6’0, 186 lbs, 77” wingspan – 40
Also hitting the best mark in the broad jump, the aforementioned Ralston Valley linebacker has the tools to play at the next level. One of those tools certainly is explosive athleticism, which he showed with an elite, verified 40-inch vertical leap at the combine. With long arms, as well as great strength and speed, Lester led a Ralston Valley team that reached the Class 5A semifinals with 105 tackles including eight tackles for loss and four sacks. He also had an interception, four pass deflections three fumbles recovered and two more caused. He does have an offer from Missouri Western but it won’t be his last.

Braylon Fenderson, 5’7.5, 142.8 lbs, 72.5” wingspan – 33
The lead running back for the relatively new program at Riverdale Ridge, Fenderson certainly has the speed to get it done on the field and was near the top in the results from each test at the combine. He rushed for 581 yards on 54 carries last season (10.8 average) and scored seven touchdowns while posting three 100-plus yard games. He also returned kicks as a junior and record 25 tackles and one interception as a defensive back on defense. When Riverdale Ridge looks to post its first winning season since adding varsity football program in 2018 this spring, Fenderson will be right at the heart of the team’s success.

David Toney, 6’1, 119.2 lbs, 77.5” wingspan – 32.5
A multi-sport athlete at Rampart, Toney put up an impressive 30-plus leap at the combine. As a junior cornerback last fall, he finished the season with 16 tackles including one for a loss. He had three pass breakups and a fumble recovered while also returning kicks on special teams. Toney is definitely on the list of rising seniors who will be key components for Rampart to have success this season.
Kase Sundarapura, 6’0.5, 178 lbs, 74” wingspan – 32.5
Sundarapura is another athlete who turned plenty of heads at Mullen High School last Friday night. Playing receiver for D’Evelyn as a junior, he was good for around 50 yards a game and caught a touchdown in 2019. As a defensive back, he averaged over five tackles a game and was also tied for third in all of Class 2A with five interceptions. Sundarapura is one of several small-school players who proved they have big-time athleticism at Mullen.
Garrett McConnell Garrett McConnell 6'3" | DB Lakewood | 2021 State CO , 6’1.5, 173 lbs, 73.5” wingspan – 32.5
McConnell is an explosive athlete who tested well in every event at the combine, including the vertical leap. His broad jump was also second best and he has been putting in a ton of work to get stronger and faster this summer. The dynamic safety led Lakewood with 105 tackles last season, also coming up with an interception and a fumble recovery. At the rate he’s going, he’ll be a player everyone should keep an eye on when high school football returns to Colorado.

Noah Jamero, 5’5.75, 154.8 lbs, 69.25” wingspan – 31.5
He might have a small frame but Jamero’s athleticism made everyone working at the Friday Night Lights combine take notice and he quickly became one of the guys everyone was watching to see what he would do next. The Castle View running back and defensive back ran the 40-yard dash (4.95) in under five seconds on the slow grass at Mullen and did well in all four tests. As a junior last season, he carried the ball five times for 45 yards and had made four tackles on defense.
CJ Smith, 5’9, 182.4 lbs, 72.25” wingspan – 31.5
Smith is coming off a breakout 2019 season in which he was second on his Mullen team with 311 rushing yards on 68 carries. He scored six touchdowns and figures to be the Mustangs’ lead back heading into the 2020 season. At the combine, Smith looked like he’s ready to step up into a bigger offensive role and Mullen head coach Jeremy Bennett indicated that would definitely be the case. Running a 4.93 40 time in the tall grass and 4.36 in the shuttle, he also jumped 103.25 inches in the broad jump and 31.5 inches in the vertical leap. That’s pretty all-around athletic.

Christopher Bowerfind Christopher Bowerfind 6'1" | RB Fossil Ridge | 2021 State CO , 5’11, 202.4 lbs, 75.25” wingspan – 31
Just take a quick scroll through his twitter account and you’ll see just how much work the Fossil Ridge running back/athlete recruit has been putting in this summer to add size and strength for the next level. Among the strongest athletes at the combine, Bowerfind tested well in every category, including a 115-inch broad jump and a 4.96 40-yard dash time on the tall offseason grass at Mullen. As a junior in 2019, Bowerfind rushed for over 500 yards and scored seven touchdowns and appears primed for a big season when the high school football season returns.

Jens Anderson, 6’0, 181.8 lbs, 73.5” wingspan – 31
Anderson impressed in every event at the Friday Night Lights combine – he ran the fastest 40-yard dash time – after carrying the ball 69 times for 275 yards as a junior last season. He also hit 116 inches in the broad jump and 31 inches in the vertical leap, putting him in if not close to the top five in all four tests. The Castle View senior certainly will be a player to watch when high school football returns to Colorado in the spring.
Sam Anderson, 6’0, 174.4 lbs, 76.5” wingspan – 30.5
The Rock Canyon players showed up to the combine in force and they definitely didn’t waste anyone’s time. Among them, Anderson has an offer on the table from St. Olaf College and tested well in all the events. That all-around athleticism, his tackling, coverage and ability to play both sides of the ball as a cornerback and receiver allowed him to be credited for 52 tackles and 19 pass deflections as a junior. He also caught a touchdown pass on offense.
Can't wait for those Friday Night Lights 🏈 @RCHSFootball1 @RecruitTheRock @CoachLaDage @McclanathanOL @CoachBobbyJay @CoachTroche56 https://t.co/7GG6QQp4xM

Zaide Hoskins-Mitchell, 5’7, 168.8 lbs, 73.5” wingspan – 30.5
Hoskins-Mitchell wasn’t among the tallest players at the combine but he left no doubt that he can get up in the air. The Mullen defensive back cleared 30 inches in the vertical leap and also did well in the other events. As a junior last season, Hoskins-Mitchell finished with 36 tackles. He also had a pair of sacks and forced tow fumbles.

Darius Padilla, 5’7, 135.2 lbs, 69” wingspan – 30.5
This multi-sport athlete (football, basketball and baseball) wears a lot of hats for the Green Mountain Rams. With everything he’s able to do, it’s no wonder Padilla put up solid all-around measurable numbers at the combine. As a safety in 2019, he had 29 tackles, five interceptions and 11 pass breakups while causing and recovering a fumble. He also returns kicks and played some quarterback, completing six of eight pass attempts with a touchdown and an interception, and caught 22 passes 229 yards and two scores at receiver. It will be interesting to see what role(s) Padilla ends up filling as a senior and how Green Mountain to uses his many talents in creative ways like this…
