With a release of PrepRedzoneMN’s Preseason All-State Offensive and Defensive teams for class 4A this week, we got to check out a 2-deep of some of the AAAA’s most hyped and accomplished athletes. Despite it being a cool honor, there are a lot standout players who are distinguished in their own right that were unfortunately left off the list. A lot of these recruits were 2022 athletes, and there’s a lot to be excited about in the soon-to-be upperclassman. Let’s check some of the honorees of the Preseason All-State pick, my Top-22 for Class 4A in MN, a quick film breakdown of the 22 selections, and a watchlist with more athletes as well! Stay tuned for some incoming 2021 and 2023 reports as well! Thanks for reading. All-State [player_tooltip player_id="18438" first="Sam" last="Rensch"] (Hutchinson) WR/FS. 6’6, 190 lbs. Preseason All-State Second Team OL. Top-22 Not All-State (no particular order) [player_tooltip player_id="18452" first="Rieley" last="Mullen"] (Big Lake) LB. 5’10, 175 lbs. Real hard-hitter who flys around without regard for his body and can go sideline-to-sideline. High motor, lot of room to grow on his frame, and is athletic enough to have helped Big Lake as a dangerous RB as well. Sophomore Season Kellen Wilke (Kasson-Mantorville) 6’ 225 lbs. OL. Moves well as a puller and can get to the second level efficiently as well. Looks skinny for 225. Sophomore Lineman Highlights [player_tooltip player_id="18531" first="Jacob" last="Heftman"] (Winona) QB. 6’2, 185 lbs. Mostly played JV last year, but with Winona’s history of putting out scholarship football players I’m sure the transition to varsity ball won’t be too hard. Great size and shows a good presence in the pocket with the ability to hurt you with his legs. Sophomore SZN Charlie Broveleit (Holy Angels) 6’, 275 lbs. Effective run-blocker who keeps his feet moving and shows a want to shove defenders faces into the turf. vs. Orono vs. Hill-Murray Ashton Sivilay (Jordan) WR. 5’11, 170 lbs. Eats up DBs cushions well and shows a knack for getting open on intermediate to deep routes. Good hands and good after the catch who can make the first man mix. Can play from the X or Z receiver positions. 10th Grade Varsity Highlights Noah Millhouse (Jordan) QB/DB. 5’10, 150 lbs. Has some great touch on his deep ball and stays strong in the pocket and has the ability to take off and hurt you with his legs as well. Playing varsity QB for Jordan is no easy task and this experience will be very beneficial. Can make throws from in or outside the pocket as well. Sophomore Highlights Peyton Nawrocki Jordan) OC/OG. 6’2, 240 lbs. Aggressive and versatile offensive lineman with a lot of room to grow. Shows good pop and good hand placement/use of hands. Soph Highlights Cayden Werner (Marshall) 6’7, 190 lbs. Played JV football last season and varsity basketball. Sophomore Basketball Highlights Gus Gartzke (Mankato-East) RB/LB. 5’9, 185 lbs. Played RB and OLB for the Cougars last fall and made some high impact plays from both sides of the football. His first four highlights on his sophomore tape come from four different positions (OLB/RB/WR/KR) and he looks like a natural athlete in all of the plays. Good, strong tackler and a strong ball-carrier as well. Sophomore Year Joseph Koch (Hill-Murray) 5’10, 180 lbs. High energy and covers a ton of ground, Koch is a speedy LB who had some strong carries as a RB as well. Hill-Murray has a good history of putting out LBs and Koch seems to be the latest and greatest. I really like how fast he gets to the backfield and how physical he is at the point of contact. Shows good range to the sideline as well. Sophomore Year Highlights Josh Painter (Simley) DB. Hard hitting tackler who is good in space and shows good technique in understanding how to set the edge. Very effective as a WR as well. Has the speed to play a deep half of the field and is physical enough to play in the box. I really like his feet and his eye discipline as well. vs. Hill Murray vs. Mahtomedi vs. Tartan Jace Burton (Columbia Heights) DL/OL. 6’0, 200 lbs. High effort defensive lineman who fires off the ball low and explosively and has a lot of strength in his 200 pound frame. Hard-hitting tackler. highlights Jack Hagen (St. Anthony Village) OL/DL. 6’2, 240 lbs. Big kid who looks like he has some potential on the defensive line. vs. Richfield Ryan Bercich (Holy Angels) LB. 6’, 215 lbs. Had a really strong game vs Orono last season and had an interception and some TFLs. Looks like he can play inside or outside LB and has the strength to disengage from blocks. Effective in coverage and triggers well on the QB once they move up into the pocket. Keeps his feet moving in space as well. vs. Orono vs. Hill-Murray Cassius Whipple-Garnett (MPLS South) OLB. 6’1, 200 lbs. All-District 2019. Effective tackler who is disruptive in the backfield and can play from a two-point stance or a three-point. 10th Grade Highlight Tyler Von Bank (Mound Westonka) QB. 6’1, 190 lbs. Good footwork and make throws from the pocket or on the move outside of the pocket. Good athlete who can take off and hurt you with his legs. Good accuracy on some deeper throws as well. Sophomore Highlight [player_tooltip player_id="18545" first="Ty" last="Lockett"] (SMB) WR. 5’10, 160 lbs. The younger brother of Michigan State football signee Terry Lockett, Ty shares his brothers speed and played some significant varsity minutes last fall as a sophomore for 4A state runner-up SMB. Was an impactful deep threat and showed some good feet and hips for his age at the WR position. I really like his hands and ball skills as well. If he puts on some weight he’s going to be dangerous. 2019 Sophomore Highlight Michael Hall (SMB) LB. 6’1, 220 lbs. Totaled 62 tackles, 9 TFL, 2 int, 2 TDs in 2019. Hall is filled in and strong for a sophomore and definitely is around his reported 220 lbs. Moves well for his size and can cover, blitz, and tackle in space. Carter Callahan (Becker) RB. 6’, 220 lbs. TD run vs. Rocori TD run vs. Delano TD run vs. Big Lake TD run vs. Apollo TD run vs. Willmar Alec Turnbull (Cloquet) Quarterback + Shooting guard on the basketball team. Will Turnbull (Cloquet) DL/TE. 6’2, 210 lbs. Great size and is a disruptive force on the DL. Fires out of his stance fast and low. Uses his hands effectively and locates the ball well. Sophomore Highlights [player_tooltip player_id="18534" first="Charlie" last="Johnson"] (SMB) QB. 6’2, 180 lbs. Played behind All-Everything QB/ATH stud [player_tooltip player_id="7244" first="Jalen" last="Suggs"] last year. Has impressive PRzMN scout Nate Wahl this offseason and possesses a strong arm and potentially good decision-making skills. Also a good frame. Will be a dangerous tandem with [player_tooltip player_id="18545" first="Ty" last="Lockett"]. Watchlist Matti Rajala (Grand Rapids) Andy Thomsen (Grand Rapids) Landon Grover (Grand Rapids) Caeden Yliniemi (Detroit Lakes) DB. Sam Sonnek (North Branch) Conner Wheeler (Chisago Lakes) 6’, 205 lbs. Trevor Jones (Zimmerman) QB. Rylan Rivers (Zimmerman) 6’4, 190 lbs. Clayton Birdsall (Big Lake) Blayne Kildahl (Big Lake) LB. Ben Karr (Hill-Murray) TE/DE. Samuel Yanz (Hill-Murray) 6’4, 180 lbs. Dixon Ehlers (Red Wing) 6’2, 220 lbs. Nolan Prokosch (Hutchinson) RB.
