Godby Linemen Make Long Trip Pay Off
Sometimes it takes a little bit of travel to get the word out about your players, and that is what Tallahassee Godby did recently.
As many athletes and parents fight with Covid-19, and still have the start of the 2020 high school football season on their minds, it was time to get out of the house and compete safely. For six Tallahassee Godby linemen, competing meant taking the nearly 400 mile trip to Fort Lauderdale for an event that may have changed the fortunes for these young men.
With former collegiate and NFL standout Torrian Wilson from “Crafting Linemen” and Javon Gopie from the “Sack Sensei” on hand with plenty of other qualified coaches, a solid group of linemen – mostly from the south Florida area – came to compete and jump into the spotlight – with a number of fan websites and scouts on hand.
“I was really impressed with these young men out there,” Wilson said. “There was some rust, but that is to be expected after such a long layoff, but technically, you had to be very impressed.”
Wilson and Gopie were blown away that Godby would travel the distance to take part, but at the same time, they understood that any time you have the opportunity to compete and showcase your skills against south Florida talent you do it.
“You look around at the talent that came out here and you understand why (head coach) Brandon Moses McCray would make sure that his linemen were in attendance,” Wilson said. “You could tell that the Godby linemen who came out were well coached and were as technically sound as anyone who attended.”
The Cougars, who lost a few athletes from last year, are still loaded – and these young men did not disappoint.
Among those on hand were:
2021 – Jaylen Gainous, DL. A solid football talent who is very athletic. The Cougars have used him at the fullback position on short yardage downs. He is a solid talent.

2022 – Chauncey Kamakea, OL. At 6-3, 255, this is one of those young men who continues to grow and mature and will certainly be among the top prospects for the Class of 2022 in Florida.

2022 – Jamichael McCants, OL. This young man is learning and growing all the time. Outstanding strength and footwork that will go a long way in giving this program added depth at the starting position for 2020.

2021 – Jeremiah Parker, DE. One of the athletic football players on the line, there will be plenty expected from him this coming season – and the staff is excited about this 6-3, 235-pounder.
2022 – Ja’Quan Samuel, OL. At 6-4, 265, here is another of the emerging underclassmen who has a chance to be very special for this program. A guard/tackle athlete who has the chance to make a major statement in 2020.

2022 – Jamaal Sweet, OL/DL. Yet another versatile underclassman that figures to mature and grow over the next two years. Played on both sides of the ball – although looked impressive at the defensive end position.
