This season possibly more than ever, versatility will be highly touted and valued due to the uncertainties that lie ahead when the season is kicked off in the next few weeks. In this list, we will dive into the profiles of 3 prospects who will make incredible impacts in all phases of the game this season.
1. Melvin Swindle Melvin Swindle 6'1" | OL Heritage Hall | 2021 State OK : 6’3″ 300 Lbs., OL/DL, Heritage Hall
When the word versatility or athlete is brought up in football, the mind almost always thinks of an offensive player who could play RB or WR, or a defensive player who could play LB or Safety. Though they are some of the most valued players in the game, we rarely think of big men who can dominate on both sides of the ball as being versatile or athletes. However, that is exactly what Melvin Swindle Melvin Swindle 6'1" | OL Heritage Hall | 2021 State OK is. On offense, he is an incredible interior lineman who is a threat to drive anyone off the field when he gets his hands on them. On defense, Swindle is a ferocious defensive tackle who constantly finds himself driving lineman into the backfield and disrupting plays. He has the potential to be a special player on either side of the ball at the next level.
2. Javyn Wright Javyn Wright 6'0" | DB Vian | 2021 State OK : 6’0″ 175 Lbs., QB/DB/PR, Vian
Last season, Vian made it all the way to the state title in 2A thanks to Javyn and a handful of other players on their team that are division 1 bound. In 2019, Javyn was dynamic in the open field where he showed off his track speed as a QB, and as a punt returner where he took a few to the house. On defense, Javyn was a ball-hawking CB and Safety and recorded a bunch of interceptions, a few for touchdowns. 2020 will be another fun year to watch this pre-season all-state athlete as he improves as a passer and continues to impress with his world-class speed.
3. Chandler Fleming Chandler Fleming 6'3" | DB Broken Bow | 2021 OK : 6’3″ 160 Lbs., QB/DB, Broken Bow
Similar to Javyn Wright Javyn Wright 6'0" | DB Vian | 2021 State OK , Chandler Fleming Chandler Fleming 6'3" | DB Broken Bow | 2021 OK is another Dual-Threat QB who doubles as a Safety on defense, however, Fleming has a much different play style than Wright. As a passer, Fleming is a much more polished passer at this stage, his touch on deep balls and corner routes is impressive, and he has a more prototypical build for a QB at 6’3″. As a runner, Fleming does not have the speed or elusiveness that Wright possesses, but he is still a gifted athlete who excelled in the run game in 2019. And finally, on defense, Fleming is a big-bodied safety who always finds himself around the ball and has been selected to a number of pre-season all-state teams heading into this season. If he can bulk up and add some weight to his frame, I believe fleming has a chance to play at either position at the next level.
