With that said, we are going to take a look at the top skill position players from as many districts as possible in the state before fall camps begin.
Some of these players are already receiving college interest, while others are looking to catch the eye of that right coach.
Trever Heitz – Charles City
Do not be surprised to see the name Trever Heitz on the list of 1,000-yard rushers in 2020.
The Charles City senior-to-be flirted with reaching that number last year, finishing with 829 yards to lead the Comets. He also scored four touchdowns on 173 attempts, averaging almost five yards per carry.
Heitz hauled in a pair of passes, as well, which is something Charles City could look to use more of in the coming year. He also recorded 42 tackles on defense.
Cael Luzum – Decorah
While he shined on the defensive side of the ball last year, Decorah’s Cael Luzum could be primed for a big season on the offensive side.
Luzum ran for 277 yards on 79 carries last year, a number that could increase with the graduation of leading rusher Andrew Magner. Decorah also saw its leading receivers depart, a role Luzum could take on in 2020.
He finished with a team-high 65.5 tackles including 46 solo stops last year. Luzum had 5.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks with an interception. On special teams, he posted almost 20 yards per kickoff return and fielded six punts.
Ramir Scott – Waterloo East
Many people know about Waterloo East’s talented running back Kjuan Owens Kjuan Owens 6'0" | 240 lbs | RB Waterloo East | 2022 IA , but the Trojans also have a nice sleeper wide receiver in Ramir Scott.
Scott hauled in 26 passes a year ago for 254 yards with two touchdowns. Much of the offensive production from that position has departed, leaving a big need for Scott to step in and contribute.
Where Scott really shined last year was in the return game, as he averaged 39 yards per kickoff return, including two touchdowns.
Jared Voss – West Delaware
Jared Voss helped West Delaware send out its senior class a winner last year, throwing for 233 yards and accounting for four touchdowns in a 36-35 win over Waterloo East.
That performance put a cap on a fine junior season for Voss, as he completed 67 of 138 passes for 993 yards with five touchdowns. He averaged almost 15 yards per completion for a quarterback rating of 109.
Voss also was effective with his feet, rushing for 316 yards and a team-leading eight touchdowns.
