Oehlertz, who remains active in multiple sports for the Indians, was a two-way starter last year as Pocahontas Area finished 5-4.
“It means a lot to me (competing for Pocahontas Area),” Oehlertz said. “Not growing up in Pocahontas, but now having been here my whole high school career, it has really made me proud to be an Indian.”
As the starting quarterback, the Class of 2021 Oehlertz completed 81 of 159 passes for 1,058 yards with seven touchdowns. He finished the season with a 106.8 quarterback rating, averaging just over 13 yards per completion.
“I have been staying in shape by working out three-to-four times a week at the weight room at my father’s high school,” Oehlertz said. “We are coming off an above .500 season for the first time in a couple years, so we are really looking forward to getting out there and seeing what we can do.
“I am most looking forward to getting back out there and playing with my friends.”
Manning the spread offense for the Indians, Oehlertz flashed his dual-threat abilities by running for 622 yards with eight touchdowns. Pocahontas Area graduates leading rusher Cage Arends, but will have a handful of players back with experience carrying the ball to help Oehlertz.
Another returning starter is leading receiver Luke Crosgrove, as the senior-to-be caught 33 passes for 475 yards and four scores. Mike Vonnahme also hauled in a handful of passes, with Arends and Caleb Freeburg each getting in on the action.
Oehlertz was also the starting safety for the Pocahontas Area defense. He recorded 31.5 tackles in all, including 24 solo stops with a fumble recovery.
As a sophomore, Oehlertz threw for 728 yards with seven touchdowns, completing 65 of 129 passes. He also ran for 397 yards with three scores and had 30.5 tackles that season.
