A handful of teams have begun modified summer camps and many school districts are opening their campuses to summer athletic activities on July 6. Some of the top quarterbacks in the county have already verbally committed to top colleges across the nation, but there are plenty of talented signal-callers who have yet to decide where to continue their football careers. The players listed below are being evaluated based on past production and projections for the 2020 season.
- Colt Fulton Colt Fulton 6'4" | 200 lbs | QB Santa Margarita Catholic | 2021 State CA , Santa Margarita — The 6-foot-4, 200 pound lefty showed moments of brilliance on a Santa Margarita team that finished in last place in the Trinity League in 2019. Fulton missed two big games due to a concussion last season. He now plays for new Santa Margarita head coach Tim Walsh, who recently spent 11 seasons as the head coach of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Fulton, who has a 3.52 GPA and 1090 SAT score, holds offers from Florida Atlantic, Bucknell, Northern Colorado and Yale.
- Dartanyon Moussiaux, Capistrano Valley — As a junior, Moussiaux had the second most passing yards in the competitive South Coast League (2139) and threw 20 touchdown passes. The 6-foot-5, 200 pound quarterback is losing three of his top four targets from last season, but has the full confidence of head coach Sean Curtis and new offensive coordinator Dan Selway. Moussiaux got an offer from Lake Eerie College in June and has interest from Fresno State among others.
- Daylen Pedroza, Orange — Pedroza is the first real dual-threat quarterback on the list and was compared to Tim Tebow at the North Orange County Shootout passing tournament last year. The lefty had 39 touchdowns last season (23 passing, 16 rushing), completed 72 percent of his passes for 2095 yards and rushed for 816 yards. Pedroza is physically gifted and the only knock on him is that Orange plays four low-quality opponents in league play, which isn’t his fault. He has offers from Bethel College, Whittier College and Lake Eerie College.
- Braeden Boyles, Edison — Boyles entered his junior season competing for playing time with Huntington Beach transfer Jacob Hanlon. Boyles ended up winning the majority of the snaps and threw for 1974 yards and 21 touchdowns, earning Sunset League Offensive Back of the Year honors. He was dominant in a first round playoff win over Heritage, throwing for 312 yards and four touchdowns. Boyles has an offer from Benedictine College and will definitely garner more interest during his senior season.
- Jaxon Smaler, Trabuco Hills — Smaler didn’t have gaudy numbers for a much-improved Trabuco Hills team last season, but his performance down the stretch drew attention. He led the Mustangs to five consecutive wins near the end of the season en route to a second place finish in the South Coast League and a semifinal appearance. The 6-foot-3, 180 pound senior has a GPA over 4 and received his first offer from Whittier College on June 17.
