Continue ReadingI’ve been making a deliberate effort to not try and discuss the COVID-19 pandemic and its affect on the college recruiting landscape for the MN preps I am blessed to cover, but with campus visits and even face-to-face meetings delayed it’s time to dive headfirst into promoting the c/o 2020 unsigned athletes from each and every position group on the gridiron. These ’20 athletes are the most impacted, so any kind of exposure these articles can provide will hopefully be helpful and important. Northstar Football News will continue these features with the third installment of the series focusing on the all-important DBs, and just like the previous DL feature Minnesota has a deep unsigned 2020 class with a ton of talent and a variety of accolades including All-State, All-Metro, MN All-Stars, and more. Whether you need a corner, free or strong safety, or possibly even a WR (a lot of these plays have experience on offense too), the 2020 Minnesota boys have a guy for you. Take a look at some still available playmakers, and enjoy the review of their careers and accomplishments. Thanks for reading, and I hope you enjoy!
Connor Raines (Shakopee) 6’0, 180 lbs. @connorrainess 3.5 GPA. First Team AP & MFCA All-State, First Team All-Metro, All-District, MN All-Star Game participant, two-sport captain who helped lead Shakopee Sabres to AAA wrestling state championship, while individually qualifying for state in the 170AAA bracket. Visited UND, SDSU. Totaled 84 tackles, 3 TFLs, 1 FF, 7 PBUs as a FS. His tape shows a fast, instinctual, and athletic DB who can hit ya and is strong in coverage. Raines also was a play-maker as on offense in the return game, so it’s safe to say he has the tools and ability to succeed at the next level. I hope he finds a home for 2020. Senior Year
Stephen Betts (St. Thomas Academy) 6’2, 185 lbs. @StephenBetts13 Second Team AP & MFCA All-State, First Team All-Metro, All-District. Recorded 103 tackles and 6 interceptions for the Class 5A State Championship Runner-ups. Team captain, 34 ACT, 4.2 GPA. Play-making safety with great range in coverage and in run support, who does a great job finding the football and can hit ya once he gets there. Strong tackler. No reported offers. Senior SZN
George Brekke George Brekke QB Lakeville South | 2020 State MN (Lakeville South) 6’3, 200 lbs. @BrekkeGeorge Third Team AP & MFCA All-State, Second Team All-Metro, All-District. Offered by Concordia St. Paul. Does not have senior highlights, but I got to watch him play live and he’s a rangy and strong FS who is a sure-tackler and makes big plays at big times. Would be a great addition to a college roster. Junior Highlights
Carter Patterson (Lakeville North) 6’1, 180 lbs. @cpatt_33 Third Team AP & MFCA All-State, Second Team All-Metro, All-District. Also only has junior highlights available, but he’s an aggressive downhill safety who is great out of his breaks, reads coverages well, and shows good technique in the pass game. Would be an excellent safety at the next level. Junior SZN
Ben Sather (Eden Prairie) 6’0, 180 lbs. @bensather_ All-District, two-sport captain, MN All-Star Game participant. Ideal SS with great athleticism that helped him as a returner for the Eagles, strong hands and the ability to get off blocks, great in-the-box player/tackler. Strong tackler with pass-rushing abilities off the edge as well. No reported offers. Senior Season
Elton Myhre (Stewartville) 6’0, 190 lbs. @elton_myhre but Twitter is pretty inactive. MN All-Star Game participant, 2x All-District, All-Area. Big, strong, physical DB who made a ton of plays and ran through a ton of would be defenders as a TE for the Tigers, and could play in the box or in the middle of the field if needed. Can’t find any news on his recruitment and/or any offers or interest. Senior Season
William Jones William Jones DB Prior Lake | 2020 State MN (Prior Lake) 6’0, 190 lbs. @WilliamJonesPL All-District, MN All-Star Game participant. Great coverage corner with excellent ball skills, smooth hips, has the beneficial ability to get his head around in coverage to make plays on the ball. Big enough to matchup with taller receivers, and is a strong tackler as well. Also explosive enough to have helped the Lakers in the return game, as you can see his kickoff return TD against the eventual 6A state champion Wayzata Trojans. I really like Jones’ DB ability, and would love to him on my team in 2020. In the spring of 2019 he received Bemidji State and UMary offers, and visited SDSU and USD. Senior SZN Highlights
Hakim Daniels Hakim Daniels DB Providence Academy | 2020 State MN (Providence Academy) 6’2, 195 lbs. @hakim_daniels Stands out on film due to his explosiveness as both a returner and a tackler. Absolutely explodes through ball-carriers, while can cover a ton of ground in coverage and can play the deep middle of the field impressively if needed. Could play in the box or as a FS. Can’t find any reported offers. Senior Year Highlights
Luke Woidyla (Pillager) 5’10, 180 lbs. @LukeWoidyla 2x All-District, District POTY. Speedy DB who played a ton in the box and in coverage for Pillager and could play a variety of positions in college. Smooth out of breaks and finds the ball well. Good tackler and plays bigger than his stature. Senior Season Highlights
Micah Cade (Benilde-St. Margaret’s) 6’2, 175 lbs. @cade_micah All-District. Got to see Cade play in one of the best games of the year in SMB vs. Benilde in the section final against some of the best competition in 5-star QB Jalen Suggs Jalen Suggs 6'4" | QB SMB | 2020 State MN and 4-star WR and Michigan State commit Terry Lockett, and Cade was more than impressive in a huge matchup in one of the biggest games of the season. Cade only allowed a crazy five (!) catches all season, with most of them coming against Lockett, and he’s a smooth and natural corner who can shut down a side of the field for four quarters in man coverage. Strong in run support, and with his 6’2 frame he’s a big corner who can matchup with speedsters or big guys on the outside, and has a ton of room to grow and add weight. About the complete package in a CB you can find. Really hopes he finds his way onto a roster next fall. Senior Season Highlights
Andres Pettis (East Ridge) 6’0, 180 lbs. @PettisAndres The first play of Pettis’ Hudl is one of the biggest hits I’ve seen on a 2020 highlight tape, and is an explosive player who helped the Raptors in the return game, can play in the box or in the middle of the field, and everything he does he does aggressively, making for a fun and exciting DB who is one of the hardest hitters on the list. Received offers from Judson University and UMN-Crookston, and visited SDSU, UMD, and UNI. Senior Highlights
Ethan Haugen (New London-Spicer) 5’10, 160 lbs. @ethanhaugen8 Dynamic athlete who scored on kick returns, punt returns, and offensively for the Wildcats, and shows a ton of potential as a DB with speed, instincts, and ball skills all already present. Senior Season 5 Games
Jakari Hunnecook (MPLS Patrick Henry) 5’7, 150 @Jakari4Hunn Despite being short in stature, the Patrick Henry Patriot has the athleticism and speed to be a lockdown coverage corner, and shows good footwork and good speed out of his breaks, and is a good tackler as well. No reported offers! Senior SZN Highlights
Miles Camery (Delasalle) 6’1, 195 lbs. Has multiple Twitter’s but not a lot of activity. In junior season, had 81 tackles, 1 sack, 1 FR, and 3 PDs. Doesn’t have a lot of film unfortunately.
Seandell Carter (Robbinsdale Cooper) 5’9, 170 lbs. Strong tackler, plays really well in the box, fast and hard hitting. Senior Season 2019 Highlights
Jakobe Bass Jakobe Bass RB Irondale | 2020 State MN (Irondale) 5’10, 185 lbs. @BassJokobe 2x All-District. Offered by UMary last summer. Got to see him play a couple times in 2019, and he’s an athletic DB who is strong in coverage and run support and has a good frame to add more weight. Was a playmaker for the Knights as well. Great hands, ball skills, and is fearless going over the middle as a WR or tackling. Junior Season
Manny Garcia (Park Center) 6’0, 170 lbs. @manny_garcia025 Holds offers from NDSCS, Augsburg University. Fast, plus an aggressive tackler with a good frame to grow, Garcia got a ton of reps with the Pirates while playing with a reckless abandonment that you want to see in a recruit. Senior Campaign
Israel Mondragon (Eden Prairie) 5’10, 175 lbs. @Israel_MB_ Holds an offer from NDSCS. Hard hitter with a lot of explosiveness as a RB, and projects well as a SS closer to the box. Junior/Senior Highlights

Spencer Wherry (Maple Grove) 6’0, 170 lbs. @swherry23 Doubled as the Crimson QB and shows a natural ability to play DB with the athleticism to boot. Ton of potential as a recruit. Only has Junior Highlights however.
