Recruiting Report: Julian Diedrich (Wayzata-2022)

Wayzata Trojan sophomore Julian Diedrich recorded over 200 yards of total offense this past fall for the eventual 6A state champions, and has only begun to tap into his full potential heading into the 2020 season. Looking to replace Trojan workhorse [player_tooltip player_id="11010" first="Christian" last="Vasser"] - who is heading to NSIC powerhouse Minnesota State Mankato - will not be an easy task by any means, but Diedrich looks like he has the talent and the fortitude to step into those shoes and take off. Standing 5’8 and weighing a solid 170 pounds, the Plymouth native is still very much growing as he has already grown 2 inches and gained a ton of weight since entering high school, and puts in work in the weight room as he benches 225 and squats 350 as only a sophomore. All of these factors - combined with his game-changing speed and some more details you’ll learn in the interview - has Northstar Football News very excited to watch Diedrich play these next two high school football season, and I believe he has a great shot of landing the RB1 job next fall. NFN was lucky enough to score some time with the current sophomore as he discusses his productive 2019 season, what he’s looking for in a potential college, what it means to be a Trojan, and more. Congratulations on the success of the 2019 season. Please begin by introducing yourself to our readers. Where are you from? When did you begin playing football? Please also provide any relevant stats, and your measurables as well. Diedrich: “I’m from Plymouth, MN and I’ve lived here ever since I could remember and I started to play football right away in 4th grade and I fell in love with the game. Some fun facts about me is that I love to be outside and hangout with friends and family. As a freshman I could run a 4.9 40 yard dash and as a freshman I could bench press 185 lbs and squat 300 lbs, and I weighed 155 lbs as a freshman and had 21 touchdowns in that 8 game season. Then as a sophomore I worked extremely hard and made varsity and started the whole season and as a sophomore (present.) I weigh 170 lbs, and I can bench press 225 and squat 350, and as of the start of the season my 40 yard dash was 4.56. I played slot WR, KR, and RB, and I had 12 receptions for 154 yards and 1 TD and I rushed for 61.12 yards on 12 attempts and 1 TD.” NFN: It was an incredible year for you and the Wayzata Trojans. Please tell us what it means for you to be a Trojan, and what your career has been like at WHS thus far. Diedrich: “To be a Trojan is truly an honor and I am very blessed to be apart of this program with great coaches and great teammates who are my brothers and my career at Wayzata has been nothing but amazing I feel at home and they put me in the best position be be successful and play at the next level.” [caption id="attachment_17986" align="alignnone" width="300"] #11[/caption] NFN: Walk us through some of differences the program has seen since you were a freshman to now rising Junior. What difference can you credit with having the biggest impact on the Trojans success this year? Diedrich: “Well as long as I’ve been on the team it has been nothing but love out of my teammates. We are so close and no team can compare to it and the culture for sure has changed because we are coming off of a 13-0 season and every team we play wants to beat us and because of that but we are humble, hard working and we pay attention to small details and focus on being 1-0 in everything we do.” NFN: How was the 2018 season for you as well as Wayzata? What were some big games, low moments, and how did you build off 2018 to succeed in 2019? Diedrich: “Well my 2018 season was amazing we went 8-0 and our closest game was Eden Prairie but we came on top with the win. We really had no low moments during my freshman year winning all games and that motivated me to work hard in the offseason and the team and I wanted a ring. We went and got it both years and they were amazing but my sophomore year I was adjusting a lot to the speed on varsity and how we run the offense.” [caption id="attachment_17983" align="alignnone" width="300"] #11[/caption] NFN:How was are offseasons at Wayzata? And how was it playing offense with studs like Vasser, Wildermuth, and Schmidt? What have they taught you about the game that you can use next season? Diedrich: “The off-season at Wayzata is very hard, but as you can see it pays off in the end because in my high school career I am 29-0. Playing with Vasser, Wildermuth, and Schmidt is very special as all of them are so talented and have a love for the game. And how they all took me under their wing and helped me learn the offense and make me better everyday and they are all my brother for life.” NFN: Describe the 2019 regular season. How was it going undefeated? When did you know you guys were going to be legit, and how fun of a year was it just to be apart of an undefeated team like yours? Diedrich: “The 2019 regular season was a movie. It was big play after big play and win after win it went by very fast but with that we had to stay focused on what was infront of us and just kept our head clear. We worked very hard and we knew we were legit from game one we always believed in ourselves and not being cocky but being humble. Being apart of this team was unforgettable and truly a honor to play with these guys and now they are all my brothers.” NFN: Elaborate on the state playoffs and especially the championship game! What were some big plays and moments, and how was your performance? Diedrich: “Well the offensive line played a huge role in our success this year and in the playoffs, but we also had some big time players in both sides of the ball who made huge plays in the playoffs. But in the championship we just focused on winning and we knew nobody in the state could stop our offensive line so we ran it a lot and Champlin Park had so response to our run attack so we just kept running it but when we won the championship it was the most amazing feeling ever and I will never forget it.” NFN:Now that you will be a junior how do you feel to be a leader on the team? What are expectations like and do you feel any pressure from the results of this year? Diedrich: “Well I am more of a leader by example and the expectations for Wayzata is nothing less then a championship, and yes there is a little pressure because we have a target on our back because of the championship we won but that does not faze us.” NFN: How about recruiting? Who are some teams you’re interested in? Also, are you going to any camps? What are you looking for in a college? Diedrich: “Well I’m keeping my options very open but of course I aspire to play at the highest level possible, or a program that can get me to the next level, or a program where I’ll have success. I have not planned any visits but I do plan to go to a lot of camps over the summer and explore my options and no schools have contacted me but I am looking for a college that has good athletics and good academics.” [caption id="attachment_17984" align="alignnone" width="300"] #11[/caption] NFN: Last but not least, what do you think you can add to a college program? And what do you do well as a football player? Diedrich: “Well I can add a lot of things to a college program I can play pretty much any position on the field with my speed and strength and I can contribute on any side of the ball.” I’m looking forward to seeing how this RB competition finished out this summer, and I have a great feeling that this won’t be the last we hear of Julian Diedrich.
