Class of 2020 Players to Watch – Quarterbacks
This story is the first in a series of stories we will be doing – highlighting some of the top seniors’ to be who will be lacing up their cleats this fall. Obviously, I have not been able to see each of the players on these lists live but have taken what I have seen from last season, what college programs are saying based on offers and invites and highlight packages – always taken with a grain of salt – the players have put together and put online.
Full disclosure . . . I don’t in any way claim to be a great talent evaluator. I am just a football fan who stumbled into a great opportunity at northstarfootballnews.com. Obviously, there are going to be deserving players who I have and will miss when putting these lists together, but hopefully, you will take these stories for what they are meant to be; a way to highlight some of who I feel will be players to watch from the Class of 2020.
Jalen Suggs Jalen Suggs 6'4" | QB SMB | 2020 State MN SMB
Of course, Suggs has offers from multiple Power Five conference teams, but you already knew that. Putting Suggs on the list was not rocket science, and there was no need to look up how many offers he has. All anyone has to see is his dominating performance in the Prep Bowl. Suggs has a great arm and can create better than anyone in the state. Along with his basketball skills, he is one of the best overall athletes in the state – but you already knew that.
Aiden Bouman Buffalo
[player_tooltip player_id="10962" first="Aidan" last="Bouman"] photo from startribune.comBouman has committed to Iowa State, but like Suggs, all you have to look at is his game on September 14th against Elk River to know the kid is one of the top guys in the state. Although they would ultimately lose the game, his stat line in that one game looked more like someone else’s mid-season stat line for the first half of a season. 40-55, 555 yards, 8 touchdowns, and zero interceptions.
Jack Foster Jack Foster QB Mankato West | 2020 State MN Mankato West
Foster has Power 5 programs looking at him – including Minnesota, Michigan State, and Iowa. With over 2000 yards of total offense in 2018, the junior can beat defenses with both his arm and his legs. He throws an effortless deep ball and while he is a one cut and go runner, at 6’5″ he is deceptively fast.
Bryce Sievers Bryce Sievers 6'3" | QB Jordan | 2020 State MN Jordan
Sievers has received early interest from FCS and DII programs. He has been to Junior Days at SDSU and UND and has been invited to Mankato, Bemidji and Minnesota State-Moorhead. As a junior, his completion percentage was just north of 60 percent, and he also rushed for over 600 yards. Sievers can stretch defenses with an accurate deep ball. He has good pocket awareness and scrambles both for rushing yards and to make time in the pocket.
Josh Fobbe Becker
With many Division II junior day invites, Fobbe is already a three-year starter for the Bulldogs. Each year he has thrown for at least 1300 yards and at least seventeen touchdowns. Fobbe has a good arm and throws well on the run. He is very creative when forced outside of the pocket and is not afraid to tuck the ball and run.
Wyatt Olson St. Peter
Olson received Junior Day invitations from both SDSU and UND. SDSU also invited the junior to a game. Olson is not going to use his legs to pick up many yards on the ground, but he can slide around in the pocket to avoid pressure and steps up in the pocket well. He makes quick decisions, and while he can throw deep, his accuracy underneath stood out.
Jake Breitbach Jake Breitbach 6'3" | 180 lbs | QB Robbinsdale Armstrong | 2020 State MN Armstrong
Last season Breitbach needed nerves of steel. Most of the year, Armstrong – unless in an obvious punting situation – would forgo a punt or field goal and go for it on fourth down. I am sure Breitbach was not as efficient on fourth down as he was in the game I was able to see – their playoff game against Eastview – but if he was anything like that day, he showed he could operate under the stress of a fourth and long just fine. Currently, he has received a junior day invite from UND. Last season, the junior accounted for 33 touchdowns – 18 through the air and 15 on the ground.
Cole Stenstrom Cole Stenstrom 6'1" | QB Mounds View | 2020 State MN Mounds View
Stenstrom has received junior day invites from NDSU, Minnesota State-Mankato, UMD, and has visited Northwestern and Northern Illinois. He was a recent junior day attendee at SCSU and UND. Stenstrom can move in the pocket and throw on the run. He is also willing to take a hit to complete a pass. He has a solid deep ball and can put balls in tight spaces.
Max Otto Delano
With Junior Day invites from SDSU and SCSU, Otto finished the 2018 season with twenty touchdowns and over 170 yards passing per game. He moves well in the pocket and is a threat to pull the ball down at any moment. He tends to run more for yards than to make time in the pocket, but when he can set his feet, he throws a nice ball.
Rudy Voss Rudy Voss 6'3" | QB Jackson County Central | 2020 State MN Jackson County Central
Voss attended Junior Day at UND and was on a game day visit to SDSU. Voss has a strong arm and can throw – and throw deep – on the run. He has good athletic ability and has speed in the open field. He is not just a straight-line runner. Once in the open field, Voss can make people miss. He is great when the play breaks down and can extend the play and although he can run, is still a pass-first quarterback.
