Winona wins Week 4 Team of the Week
Winona, after its road win over Mankato West, was selected as the Week 4 Team of the Week, winning more than 60 percent of the fan voting.
Trailing the Scarlets 14-7 at intermission, the Winhawks outscored West 18-0 in the final two quarters.
“We made an adjust on defense to have our defensive end away from the their running back to help take away runs,” said Winhawks coach John Cassellius via email. “On offense, we talked about communication with the offensive line and speeding up our steps.”
Quarterback Jackson Nibbelink totaled three scores (two pass, one rush) with 196 passing yards. Senior Terrell Hall led the offense with 160 receiving yards and a touchdown, while Zaid Elsabbagh paced the defense with 11 tackles.
“I was very pleased with them understanding that this was a big game, we talked about how this game isn’t going to be won in a half,” Casselius said. “There were going to be big plays made by both team but, the final quarter would determine the winner.”
Blaine, following their 56-20 rout of Cretin-Derham Hall, finished second in the Week 4 fan voting with more than 35 percent of the vote.
